Here\u2019s some guidance to ease your transition into life in London before you kick off your journey at Imperial, allowing you to savor the city.<\/p>\n<p>Be it that you\u2019re arriving weeks ahead or just in time for the term, here\u2019s the insight I wish I had upon my arrival.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>First and foremost: secure your living arrangements<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Steer clear of pricey hotel stays by organizing your accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but many aren\u2019t, as the top choices get snapped up quickly. Strive to find a place close to your campus or on a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes to early morning classes.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Administrative tasks: sorting out vital necessities<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>When you step into London, take care of these essential items:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Money transfers \u2013 as an international student, seek a dependable and cost-effective method to transfer funds from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut can help you avoid unfavorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n<li>UK SIM card \u2013 make sure you can access data for navigation by obtaining a UK SIM card without delay.<\/li>\n<li>Bank account \u2013 certain banks may require a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are quick and cater well to students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time job earnings.<\/li>\n<li>Student ID card \u2013 this card provides entry to campus facilities, the library, and student discounts. Make sure to collect it as soon as you can.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Your initial week at Imperial is paramount<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Your first week at Imperial is vital for shaping your student experience. It\u2019s when you\u2019ll meet roommates, peers, and future companions. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies and engage in activities that capture your interest.<\/p>\n<p>Even if you\u2019re on the reserved side, make an effort to take part. Some of my closest friendships began during spontaneous campus tours and society stalls. Your first week lays the foundation for your university journey.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Mastering London: travel wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In my initial week, I struggled with understanding the Tube or buses, resulting in a nine-kilometer walk across London. It was unforgettable yet hectic. Get your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel affordably on the Tube and buses.<\/p>\n<p>Walking remains the finest way to embrace the city and its culture. London is teeming with hidden treasures that you\u2019ll uncover through exploration.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Discover your comfort zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>London can feel emotionally heavy. Having a sanctuary is beneficial \u2013 for me, it\u2019s the park near my residence. I go there daily to unwind. My secondary comfort spot is the O2, just a 10-minute journey away, where I catch movies weekly to relax.<\/p>\n<p>Identify your own locations, be it a caf\u00e9, a bookstore, or a riverside bench, where you can unwind and recharge in the bustling city.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>And remember to wander!<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Get to know your frequently visited areas around campus and your residence. Locate the nearest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee spots.<\/p>\n<p>Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, and take a red double-decker bus for the view. Some of your fondest memories will arise from getting a bit lost!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Final insights before jumping into<\/strong> Imperial student life<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Carry a reusable bag \u2013 shops often charge for single-use alternatives.<\/li>\n<li>Purchase a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas don\u2019t fare well against strong winds.<\/li>\n<li>Embrace unusual events \u2013 they yield great stories.<\/li>\n<li>Don&#8217;t fret if you feel disoriented \u2013 it&#8217;s a common experience for everyone at first.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You don\u2019t have to have everything sorted on the first day. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re already ahead of where I stood when I started at Imperial.
