Stepping into London for the first time was intense due to its expanse and speed. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I felt lost on where to start. If you\u2019re about to go through this, don\u2019t fret. Here\u2019s my guidance to assist you in acclimating to London prior to your time at Imperial, allowing you to savor your new urban life.<\/p>\n

Regardless of whether you arrive weeks prior or just ahead of term, here\u2019s the counsel I wish I had received upon my arrival.<\/p>\n

First things first: secure your accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

By arranging your housing early, you can avoid expensive hotel costs. I was lucky, but many aren\u2019t, since the top choices disappear swiftly. Try to find a place close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to make those early morning journeys smoother.<\/p>\n

Administrative essentials: getting the basics sorted<\/strong><\/h3>\n

As you arrive in London, focus on these tasks:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 as an international student, seek a trustworthy and budget-friendly method to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide competitive rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM card \u2013 vital for finding your way in a new locale. Acquire one with data soon after landing.<\/li>\n
  • Establishing a bank account \u2013 digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are fast and student-friendly, essential for daily spending and part-time job earnings.<\/li>\n
  • Obtain your student ID card \u2013 important for using campus services, libraries, and student discounts. Secure it promptly.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Your initial week at Imperial is pivotal<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    The first week at Imperial is critical for your student experience. It\u2019s when you connect with flatmates, classmates, and future companions. Participate in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-led clubs and societies and join the ones that pique your interest.<\/p>\n

    Even if you feel shy, challenge yourself to take part. I did and forged friendships during campus tours and society exhibitions. This week establishes the foundation for your university adventure.<\/p>\n

    Getting around London: travel wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    At first, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses and ended up walking nine kilometers across London. It was an unforgettable but hectic experience. Get your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for reduced Tube and bus fares.<\/p>\n

    Walking remains the best way to engage with the city and its culture, uncovering hidden treasures as you explore.<\/p>\n

    Discover your favorite spots<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can feel emotionally taxing at first. Having a go-to place can be comforting \u2013 mine is the park close to my home, where I visit daily for relaxation. My other favorite is the O2, only 10 minutes away, where I enjoy a weekly movie.<\/p>\n

    Identify your own spots, like a caf\u00e9, bookstore, or a bench by the river, to unwind and recharge in this bustling city.<\/p>\n

    And remember to explore!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Get to know the areas you frequent around your campus and residence. Identify the nearest supermarket, drugstore, parks, and your go-to eateries or coffee shops.<\/p>\n

    Check out iconic landmarks and use your weekends to venture into the city. Visit free museums, take a ride on a red double-decker bus for the views, and roam aimlessly. Some of your fondest memories will arise from getting a bit lost!<\/p>\n

    Final tips before diving into<\/strong> student life at Imperial<\/h3>\n

    • Grab a reusable bag \u2013 stores frequently charge for single-use ones.<\/li>\n
    • Invest in a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas often fail against wind-driven rain.<\/li>\n

    • Don\u2019t panic if you feel disoriented \u2013 everyone feels that way at first.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
