The city felt enormous, bustling, and incredibly fast-paced, leaving me unsure of how to get started with just a suitcase and Google Maps. If you find yourself in a similar situation, there&#8217;s no need to fret. Here&#8217;s how to set your new life in London in motion before beginning at Imperial, allowing you to fully embrace being a newcomer in the city.<\/p>\n<p>Regardless of whether you arrive weeks in advance or just before the term kicks off, here\u2019s the guidance I wish I had received.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Secure accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Steer clear of pricey hotel stays by organizing your lodging ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone gets this chance, as the best choices disappear fast. Try to find a spot close to your campus or along a reliable Tube line to avoid lengthy commutes to early classes.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Essential life tasks to tackle<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Once you&#8217;ve landed in London, make sure to sort out these essentials quickly:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Money transfers \u2013 as an international student, seek a dependable, economical method to send money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide better exchange rates.<\/li>\n<li>UK SIM card \u2013 vital for data and navigation in an unfamiliar city. Obtain one soon after your arrival.<\/li>\n<li>Bank account \u2013 some banks may require a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and cater to students. Establish an account for transactions and income from part-time jobs.<\/li>\n<li>Student ID card \u2013 essential for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Acquire it as early as possible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3><strong>Your initial week at Imperial is key<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The first week at Imperial is crucial for shaping your student experience. It&#8217;s when you&#8217;ll connect with flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-led clubs and societies and engage in activities that catch your interest.<\/p>\n<p>Even if you&#8217;re introverted, challenge yourself to get involved. I did and formed some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society booths. Your first week sets the foundation for your university experience.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Smart travel in London<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>During my first week, I found myself confused by the Tube and buses, resulting in a nine-kilometer walk across London. It was a memorable adventure, but quite chaotic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for affordable travel on the Tube and buses.<\/p>\n<p>Walking remains the best way to truly experience the city and its culture, allowing you to uncover hidden gems along your journey.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Find your favorite spots<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>London can be emotionally intense, particularly at the start. Having a go-to spot is beneficial \u2013 mine is a nearby park where I retreat daily to unwind. The O2, merely 10 minutes away, is another favorite of mine for relaxing with a movie.<\/p>\n<p>Discover your own cherished places, whether a cafe, bookstore, or riverside bench. These locations can be more comforting than you&#8217;d expect.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Embark on exploration!<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Familiarize yourself with the areas you frequent around campus and your accommodation. Pinpoint your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred food or coffee joints.<\/p>\n<p>Check out iconic landmarks, visit free museums, hop on a double-decker bus for a scenic view, and wander aimlessly. Some of your best memories will arise from getting a bit lost!<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Final thoughts before immersing into Imperial life<\/strong><\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Bring a reusable bag \u2013 stores typically charge for single-use bags.<\/li>\n<li>Invest in a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas can fail against wind-driven rain.<\/li>\n<li>Attending unique events \u2013 they lead to memorable stories.<\/li>\n<li>Don\u2019t stress if you feel disoriented \u2013 it\u2019s completely normal at the onset.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>You don&#8217;t have to have everything figured out on day one. If you&#8217;re reading this, you&#8217;re already ahead of where I was when I stepped into Imperial.
