Stepping into London was quite daunting due to its vastness, noise, and rapid pace. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you find yourself in a similar situation soon, there’s no need for concern. Here are some tips to help you adjust to your new life in London before your journey at Imperial begins, allowing you to fully embrace the experience of being new to the city.<\/p>\n

Whether you\u2019re arriving a bit early or just right before the term begins, here\u2019s the guidance I wish I had received upon my initial arrival.<\/p>\n

First things first: secure your accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

To avoid the expensive hotel rates, it\u2019s smart to arrange your living situation ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as the best choices go fast! Try to find a place close to your campus or near a dependable Tube line \u2013 early lectures can be tough if you\u2019re over an hour away.<\/p>\n

Administrative essentials: organizing what you need<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Once in London, there are several crucial tasks to handle as soon as you can:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 if you\u2019re an international student, look for a trustworthy and cost-effective method to transfer funds from your home country. Services like Wise or Revolut can help avoid poor conversion rates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
      \n
    • UK SIM card \u2013 having mobile data is essential for navigation, especially in a new area or country. Acquire a UK SIM card and data shortly after you arrive.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
        \n
      • Setting up a bank account \u2013 some banks need a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are quick and cater to students. Establish a bank account for everyday transactions and to receive payments for any part-time jobs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        • Student ID card \u2013 this is vital for accessing campus facilities, the library, and obtaining student discounts. Be sure to collect your student ID card as soon as you can.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          The first week at Imperial is crucial<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          Your initial week at Imperial is key to your overall student experience. It\u2019s when you will meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Get involved in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and enroll in activities that pique your interest.<\/p>\n

          Even if you\u2019re shy, challenge yourself to join in. I did, and found some of my closest friends during unexpected campus tours and society stalls. Your first week establishes the foundation for your university experience.<\/p>\n

          Getting around London: travel wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          During my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses and ended up walking nine kilometers across the city. It was chaotic yet unforgettable \u2013 don\u2019t replicate my mistake. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel on the Tube and buses more cheaply.<\/p>\n

          Nevertheless, walking is also a fantastic way to soak in the city and its culture. You\u2019ll stumble upon hidden treasures by exploring on foot.<\/p>\n

          Discover your comforting places<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          London can be emotionally intense, especially at the beginning. Having a comforting spot is beneficial \u2013 for me, it\u2019s the park close to my home. I visit it daily to relax and regroup. My second cozy place is the O2, just ten minutes away, where I catch movies weekly to decompress.<\/p>\n

          Identify your own locations that provide solace in the bustling city, whether it\u2019s a caf\u00e9, a bookstore, or a riverside bench. Having a space to unwind and recharge can be more helpful than you realize.<\/p>\n

          And make sure to explore!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          Familiarize yourself with the most frequented areas around your campus and residence. Find your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred spots for food or coffee.<\/p>\n

          Check out famous sights and spend weekends discovering your new city. Visit free museums, take a ride on a red double-decker bus for the views, and wander around without an itinerary. Some of your best experiences will come from moments of getting a little lost!<\/p>\n

          Final insights before diving into<\/strong> Imperial student life<\/h3>\n

          • Grab a reusable bag \u2013 supermarkets and stores typically charge for single-use bags.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
