Stepping into London for the first time felt quite daunting, with its immense size, hustle, and relentless pace. With just a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I was at a loss on how to start. If you\u2019re about to embark on a similar journey, relax. Here are some tips to help you acclimate to London before your time at Imperial, enabling you to savor the city.<\/p>\n

Whether you arrive weeks in advance or just prior to the semester, here\u2019s the guidance I wish I had received upon arrival.<\/p>\n

First priority: secure your accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Steer clear of expensive hotels by organizing your housing early. I was lucky, but that isn’t the case for everyone, as the best accommodations get booked swiftly. Strive for a location that\u2019s close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to circumvent long commutes for morning classes.<\/p>\n

Managing life: organizing the vital components<\/strong><\/h3>\n

As soon as you reach London, promptly handle these essentials:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 as an international student, discover a reliable method to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    • UK SIM card \u2013 vital for navigation and data access. Acquire one shortly after your arrival.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      • Bank account \u2013 quick and student-friendly, digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are ideal for everyday transactions and part-time job income.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        • Student ID card \u2013 essential for entry to campus facilities, libraries, and receiving student discounts. Obtain it without delay.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          Your initial week at Imperial is paramount<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          Your first week at Imperial is significant. This is when you\u2019ll meet flatmates, classmates, and future connections. Immerse yourself in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and engage in areas that pique your interest.<\/p>\n

          Even if you’re introverted, challenge yourself to take part. I did, and I met some of my dearest friends during campus tours and society stalls. Your initial week establishes the foundation for your university adventure.<\/p>\n

          Exploring London: travel wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          During my first week, I ended up walking nine kilometers across London due to getting lost with the Tube and buses. It was a memorable but hectic experience. Secure your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for reduced Tube and bus fares.<\/p>\n

          Walking remains an excellent way to experience the city and uncover hidden treasures.<\/p>\n

          Discover your personal comfort zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          London can be emotionally taxing. Having a comforting place can help \u2013 mine is a local park. I visit it daily to unwind. My second favorite spot is the O2, only 10 minutes away, where I catch movies each week.<\/p>\n

          Identify your own comfort locations, such as a cafe, bookstore, or riverside bench, to relax and refresh.<\/p>\n

          And remember to venture out!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          Familiarize yourself with the areas you frequent around campus and your residence. Identify nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your preferred food or coffee venues.<\/p>\n

          Check out iconic landmarks, explore free museums, and take a ride on a red double-decker bus for the scenic views. Some of your fondest memories will come from getting a bit lost!<\/p>\n

          Final pointers before you dive into<\/strong> Imperial student life<\/h3>\n

          • Grab a reusable bag \u2013 shops frequently charge for single-use ones.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

            • Invest in a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas often fall short against wind-driven rain.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                  You don\u2019t have to have everything planned out on the first day. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, pick up your Oyster card, and start your London journey one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.<\/p>\n
