Stepping foot in London for the very first time was quite an experience. The city appeared immense, noisy, and bustling. Armed with just a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you\u2019re about to embark on this journey, don\u2019t fret. Here\u2019s some guidance to ease your transition into life in London before you embark on your journey at Imperial, allowing you to fully embrace what the city has to offer.<\/p>\n

Whether you arrive weeks in advance or just minutes before the term begins, here\u2019s the insight I wish I had upon my arrival.<\/p>\n

First thing’s first: secure your accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Make arrangements for your housing early to avoid costly hotel fees. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune, as the prime choices are snatched up quickly. Target a location close to campus or near a dependable Tube line, since lengthy commutes to morning lectures can be challenging.<\/p>\n

Administrative tasks: organizing the essentials<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Once you land in London, tackle these essentials without delay:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 as an international student, seek a trustworthy and economical method to transfer funds from home. Platforms like Wise or Revolut can help sidestep unfavorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM card \u2013 obtain one promptly to have data available for navigation in a new environment.<\/li>\n
  • Bank account \u2013 while some banks require a UK address, digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and friendly to students. Open an account for everyday transactions and payments from part-time work.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID card \u2013 this provides access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Your initial week at Imperial is vital<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Your first week at Imperial is essential for your student journey. Meet your flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies and enroll in activities that pique your interest.<\/p>\n

    If you\u2019re shy, challenge yourself to engage. I did and formed lifelong friendships during campus tours and society booths. Your initial week shapes the experience of your university life.<\/p>\n

    Getting around London: travel wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses, resulting in a nine-kilometre trek across London. It was unforgettable yet chaotic. Get your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel on the Tube and buses cost-effectively.<\/p>\n

    Walking remains a fantastic way to navigate the city and uncover hidden treasures.<\/p>\n

    Establish your comfort zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can be emotionally intense at the beginning. Identifying a comfort zone can be beneficial \u2013 mine is a local park that I frequent daily to unwind. Another favorite is the O2, merely 10 minutes away, where I enjoy a movie weekly.<\/p>\n

    Discover your own places, whether a caf\u00e9, bookstore, or riverside bench, to relax and rejuvenate.<\/p>\n

    And remember to explore!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Familiarize yourself with the areas you frequent near campus and home. Locate the closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, as well as your preferred food or coffee destinations.<\/p>\n

    Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, and hop on a red double-decker bus. Some of your most cherished memories will emerge from wandering a bit off the beaten path!<\/p>\n

    Final insights before you dive into<\/strong> Imperial student life<\/h3>\n

    • Get a reusable bag \u2013 shops impose charges for single-use ones.<\/li>\n
    • Invest in a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas can be ineffective against wind.<\/li>\n
    • Participate in unique events \u2013 they provide fantastic stories.<\/li>\n
    • Don\u2019t fret if you feel disoriented \u2013 it\u2019s perfectly normal at the outset.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      You don\u2019t need to have everything sorted out from day one. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re already one step ahead of where I was at the beginning. Take a moment, grab your Oyster card, and start writing your London narrative one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.<\/p>\n
