The city appeared enormous, noisy, and bustling. Armed with just a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt lost on where to start. If you find yourself in a similar position, there’s no need to fret. Here’s some guidance to assist you in acclimating to London before your journey at Imperial kicks off, ensuring you can savor your new urban life.

Whether you’re arriving weeks in advance or just right before classes commence, here’s the wisdom I wish I’d received upon my arrival.

First things first: secure your accommodation

To steer clear of expensive hotel bills, organize your housing early. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone, as the prime options vanish swiftly. Aim for lodgings close to your campus or an efficient Tube line to avoid lengthy commutes for morning lectures.

Life admin: taking care of essential tasks

As soon as you land in London, make sure to tackle these necessities without delay:

Money transfers – as an international student, seek a trustworthy, cost-effective method to send money from back home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide more favorable exchange rates.

UK SIM card – without data, navigating around an unfamiliar area can be tough. Obtain a UK SIM card and data plan shortly after you arrive.

Opening a bank account – some banks ask for a UK address, but digital banking options like Monzo or Starling are quick and student-friendly. Set up an account for daily expenses and part-time job earnings.

Student ID card – vital for gaining access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Collect it at the earliest opportunity.

Your initial week at Imperial is paramount

Your inaugural week at Imperial is essential. It’s the time when you’ll connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Take advantage of Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and sign up for the ones that pique your interest.

Even if you’re feeling a bit shy, challenge yourself to get involved. I did and formed close friendships during campus walks and society fair encounters. Your first week establishes the foundation for your university journey.

Getting around London: travel wisely

During my first week, I struggled to navigate the Tube and buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was hectic yet memorable. Avoid my blunder by acquiring a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount to enjoy lower Tube and bus fares.

Walking remains an excellent way to immerse yourself in the city’s culture and uncover hidden treasures.

Identify your cozy spots

Initially, London can be emotionally intense. Having a comforting location aids – mine is a local park where I visit daily to unwind. Another is the O2, a mere 10-minute distance, where I relax with weekly movie outings.

Discover your own havens, whether it be a cafe, bookstore, or riverside bench. These locations provide essential opportunities for relaxation and rejuvenation.

And remember to explore!

Get acquainted with popular locations near your campus and residence. Identify nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your preferred dining or coffee establishments.

Visit iconic landmarks, wander through free museums, hop on a red double-decker bus, and meander without an itinerary. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from slightly losing your way!

Final pointers before diving into Imperial student life

Grab a reusable bag – shops and supermarkets typically charge for single-use options.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas won’t protect you when the wind hits.

Embrace spontaneous events – they lead to the most memorable stories.

Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – everyone does initially.

There’s no need to have everything sorted out on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was as I started at Imperial. So take a breath, fetch your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To learn more about my journey, click here.

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping foot in London for the first time was quite a lot to handle.
