Stepping into London for the first time was quite daunting. The city appeared massive, noisy, and full of energy. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps at my disposal, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you are about to go through this, don\u2019t fret. Here are some tips to ease your transition into life in London prior to commencing at Imperial, allowing you to fully embrace the city.<\/p>\n

Whether you\u2019re arriving a few weeks in advance or just before the semester kicks off, here\u2019s the guidance I wish I had received upon my entry.<\/p>\n

First things first: secure accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

To avoid expensive hotel bills, arrange your living situation as early as possible. I was lucky, but not everyone gets that chance, as the prime options tend to vanish quickly. Try to locate a place close to your campus or a reliable Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes for early morning lectures.<\/p>\n

Administrative tasks: organizing essential services<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Once you arrive in London, prioritize these essential matters:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 as an overseas student, find a trustworthy and cost-effective method to transfer funds from your home nation. Applications like Wise or Revolut can help you avoid unfavorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
      \n
    • UK SIM card \u2013 having mobile data is vital for navigating a new environment. Obtain a UK SIM card and data package promptly after your arrival.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
        \n
      • Setting up a bank account \u2013 while some banks may need a UK address, digital banks such as Monzo or Starling offer a quick and student-friendly setup. Open an account for everyday transactions and payments from part-time jobs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
          \n
        • Student ID card \u2013 this is crucial for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and obtaining student discounts. Make sure to collect it without delay.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          Your inaugural week at Imperial is pivotal<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          Your first week at Imperial is vital for shaping your student experience. It’s the period for meeting flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Engage in Welcome Week to discover more than 350 student-led clubs and societies and participate in activities that pique your interest.<\/p>\n

          Even if you consider yourself shy, challenge yourself to join in. I did, and I met some of my closest friends during campus tours and society promotions. Your initial week establishes the foundation for your university adventure.<\/p>\n

          Getting around London: travel wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          <pDuring my first week, I was clueless about the Tube or buses, which led to me walking nine kilometers across London. It was memorable yet hectic. Get your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more economical travel on the Tube and buses.<\/p>\n

          Walking remains an excellent way to navigate the city and uncover hidden treasures.<\/p>\n

          Identify your comfort spaces<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          London can seem overwhelming, especially at the beginning. Having a refuge is beneficial \u2013 mine is a nearby park where I go to unwind. My secondary location is the O2, only 10 minutes away, where I relax with a movie weekly.<\/p>\n

          Discover your own comforting places, whether it\u2019s a caf\u00e9, bookstore, or a bench by the river. These spots can be more beneficial than you might anticipate.<\/p>\n

          And remember to explore!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          Familiarize yourself with the areas you frequently visit around your campus and home. Find your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and your favorite eateries or coffee shops.<\/p>\n

          Visit iconic landmarks, explore free museums, and hop on a red double-decker bus for the panoramic views. Some of your most memorable experiences will come from wandering around a bit!<\/p>\n

          Final guidance before you immerse yourself<\/strong> in Imperial student life<\/h3>\n

          • Invest in a reusable bag \u2013 shops commonly charge for single-use bags.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
              \n
            • Acquire a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas often don\u2019t hold up well against the wind.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

              • Participate in unusual events \u2013 they result in fantastic stories.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                • Don\u2019t stress if you feel disoriented \u2013 that\u2019s a common feeling at first.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                  You don\u2019t need to have everything sorted out on the first day. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a moment to breathe, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.<\/p>\n
