Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I found myself uncertain about where to begin. If you find yourself in a similar position, there’s no need to fret. Here’s some guidance to help you adjust to your new life in London before your journey at Imperial begins, allowing you to relish the experience of being new in the city.

Whether you’re arriving ahead of schedule or just before the term begins, here’s the advice I wish I’d been given when I first got here.

**Locate Housing**

By arranging accommodation in advance, you can avoid costly hotel bills. While luck was on my side, it isn’t a guarantee for everyone. The best options get snapped up quickly! Seek a place close to your campus or on a dependable Tube line to sidestep lengthy commutes to early classes.

**Administrative Essentials to Address**

Once you’re in London, tackle these key tasks without delay:

– Currency Transfers: As an international student, find an efficient and budget-friendly method to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.
– UK SIM Card: Secure one right away to gain access to data and navigation in an unfamiliar area.
– Bank Account: Some banks need a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are swift and student-friendly. An account is necessary for transactions and payments from part-time work.
– Student ID Card: This is essential for entering campus buildings, libraries, and obtaining student discounts. Acquire it as soon as you can.

**The Initial Week at Imperial is Important**

Your first week at Imperial is crucial to your student experience. You’ll get to know flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Engage in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies and join activities that pique your interest.

Even if you’re introverted, challenge yourself to participate in events. I met some of my closest friends during spontaneous campus tours and society stalls. Your first week shapes your entire university experience.

**Getting Around London: Travel Wisely**

During my initial week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or bus systems, resulting in a nine-kilometer walk across London. Though memorable, it was quite chaotic. Get your Student Oyster card and register for the 18+ discount for affordable travel on the Tube and buses.

Walking remains the best way to immerse yourself in the city and its culture. You’ll uncover hidden treasures by meandering around.

**Identify Your Relaxation Spots**

Initially, London can be emotionally intense. Having a comforting place to retreat to is beneficial—mine is a local park where I unwind daily. My secondary spot is the O2, a short 10-minute walk away, where I enjoy movies each week.

Discover your own comforting areas, such as a café, bookstore, or a bench by the river. These environments will aid in relaxation and rejuvenation.

**Venture Out!**

Familiarize yourself with the regularly visited locales around campus and your residence. Identify your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite eateries or coffee shops.

Explore iconic landmarks and spend your weekends discovering the city. Visit free museums, take a ride on a red double-decker bus for the scenery, and roam without a set itinerary. Some of your most memorable experiences will stem from wandering a bit off course!

**Final Suggestions Before Embarking on Imperial Student Life**

– Purchase a reusable bag to dodge charges for single-use ones.
– Invest in a waterproof jacket, as umbrellas are ineffective in windy conditions.
– Attend unique events for memorable stories.
– It’s normal to feel lost initially—everyone experiences that!

There’s no need to have it all figured out on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already one step ahead of where I was when I started at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one red bus ride and Tesco trip at a time.

To discover more about my journey, [read my Imperial story.](https://www.imperial.ac.uk/Stories/my-imperial-story-vijay/)

By Guest Blogger
Categorised under Applying to Imperial
Tagged International Student, life at imperial

Upon my arrival in London, the city seemed vast, noisy, swift, and somewhat daunting.
