The city felt enormous, noisy, and bustling. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I was unclear on where to start. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to assist you in settling down before commencing at Imperial, allowing you to relish your new city adventure.

Whether you arrive weeks in advance or just as term starts, here’s the advice I wish I had received upon my entry.

First and foremost: secure accommodation

Prevent expensive hotel stays by organizing lodging ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone is, since the best choices vanish quickly. Try to locate a residence near campus or close to a reliable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for early morning classes.

Essential administrative tasks: getting the basics sorted

When you reach London, prioritize the following:

Transferring funds – as an international student, seek a dependable and budget-friendly method to send money from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide better exchange rates.

UK SIM card – having data is crucial for navigating a new city. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan as soon as possible.

Opening a bank account – some banks insist on a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and cater well to students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and part-time job wages.

Student ID card – important for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as feasible.

Your inaugural week at Imperial is pivotal

The first week at Imperial is vital for your student journey. It’s when you can meet roommates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-led clubs and societies, and engage in activities that spark your interest.

Even if you feel reserved, make an effort to join in. I did, and I formed lasting friendships during campus tours and society events. Your first week lays the groundwork for your university experience.

Navigating London: travel wisely

During my initial week, I grappled with the Tube and buses, which led to me walking nine kilometers across London. It was hectic yet unforgettable. Avoid this by obtaining a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for more affordable Tube and bus journeys.

Walking remains an excellent means to experience the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Discover your favorite spots

London can be emotionally intense, especially at the beginning. Having a comforting location is beneficial – mine is a park near my residence where I go to unwind daily. My second favorite is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I watch films weekly.

Identify your own comfort zones, whether they are a café, bookstore, or a bench by the river, to facilitate relaxation and rejuvenation.

And don’t overlook the adventure of exploration!

Familiarize yourself with the areas you frequent around campus and home. Locate your nearest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and preferred dining or coffee locations.

Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, enjoy a ride on a red double-decker bus for the views, and wander aimlessly. Some of your most cherished memories will be forged from moments of getting a bit lost!

Final pointers before immersing yourself in Imperial student life

Acquire a reusable bag – stores often impose a charge for single-use bags.

Purchase a waterproof jacket – umbrellas are ineffective in strong winds.

Embrace unusual events – they create wonderful stories.

Don’t be concerned if you feel disoriented – it’s a common feeling initially.

You don’t need to have everything organized on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I arrived at Imperial. Take a moment, grab your Oyster card, and commence your London journey one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To learn more about my experiences, <a href="https://www.imperial.ac.uk/Stories/my-imperial-story-vijay/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" aria-label="https://www.imperial.ac

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the first time was quite an experience.
