Armed only with a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt adrift. If you are on the brink of this experience, have no fear. Here’s how to set your new life in London in motion before beginning at Imperial, allowing you to truly enjoy your fresh start in the city.

Whether you come early or just shortly before the term kicks off, here’s the guidance I wish someone had shared with me.

First and foremost: secure your accommodation

Steer clear of costly hotel bills by arranging your housing in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune, as the top choices vanish quickly. Try to find a residence close to your campus or on a dependable Tube line to minimize long journeys to early classes.

Life organization: handling the crucial necessities

Once you’re in London, tackle these necessities without delay:

Money transfers – as an international student, seek a trustworthy, economical method to send funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.

UK SIM card – acquire one promptly to avoid being without mobile data and directions in an unfamiliar place.

Bank account – while some banks ask for a UK address, online banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and cater to students. Open an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.

Student ID card – vital for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student deals. Obtain it as soon as possible.

The initial week at Imperial is pivotal

Your debut week at Imperial is vital for your student life experience. It’s when you’ll connect with flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies and engage in activities that pique your interest.

Even if shyness holds you back, challenge yourself to get involved. Some of my closest friendships were formed during random campus tours and society booths. Your first week influences the trajectory of your university experience.

Getting around London: travel wisely

During my initial week, I was baffled by the Tube and buses, resulting in a nine-kilometer trek across London. It was hectic but unforgettable – don’t follow in my footsteps. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to lower your travel costs on the Tube and buses.

Still, walking remains the finest way to soak in the city and its culture. You’ll uncover hidden treasures through leisurely exploration.

Discover your comforting spots

London may initially seem overwhelming. Having a go-to place that brings you comfort is beneficial – mine is a park close to my home, where I visit daily to recharge. The O2, just a 10-minute stroll away, is my secondary comfort zone for weekly cinema outings.

Identify your own places that provide solace in the bustling city, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or a bench by the river. These locations can be more comforting than you might realize.

And remember to explore!

Familiarize yourself with the neighborhoods surrounding campus and your residence. Locate nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and preferred dining or coffee spots.

Tour iconic landmarks, visit free museums, ride a red double-decker bus, and roam aimlessly. Some of your fondest memories will result from embracing being slightly lost!

Final advice before diving into Imperial student life

Get a reusable shopping bag – stores often charge for disposable ones.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas won’t hold up against the wind.

Be open to unexpected events – they lead to the best stories.

Don’t worry if you feel lost – everyone experiences that at first.

You don’t have to have everything sorted on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already further along than I was when I began at Imperial – so take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London journey one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To learn more about my journey, read my Imperial story.

<p class="imp-post

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Upon my arrival in London, the city appeared immense, noisy, and daunting.
