Armed with just a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt lost about where to start. If you’re about to embark on this adventure, there’s no need to fret. Here’s my guidance to help you acclimate to life in London before you begin at Imperial, ensuring you can relish the city.

Regardless of whether you’re arriving weeks in advance or just right before the term starts, here’s the advice I wish I had received upon entering the city.

Firstly: secure accommodation

Avoid pricey hotel fees by organizing your living situation early. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune, as the prime options are snatched up quickly. Look for a place in proximity to your campus or along a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes to morning classes.

Administrative tasks: settling the essentials

Once you’re in London, tackle these essentials without delay:

Money transfers – as an international student, discover a trustworthy and cost-effective method to send money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide excellent exchange rates.

UK SIM card – having data is vital for getting around. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan shortly after you arrive.

Establishing a bank account – some banks might need a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and cater to students. Open an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.

Obtain your student ID card – this permits entry to campus facilities, libraries, and discounts for students. Collect it at your earliest convenience.

Your initial week at Imperial is key

The first week at Imperial is vital. It’s when you connect with flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to explore over 350 student-led clubs and societies, and join the ones that pique your interest.

Even if you tend to be shy, make an effort to engage. I did, and it led to close friendships during campus tours and society events. Your initial week sets the foundation for your university experience.

Getting around London: smart travel tips

During my first week, I struggled with the Tube and buses, resulting in walking nine kilometers across London. It was chaotic but unforgettable. Instead, get your Student Oyster card and request the 18+ discount to travel cost-effectively.

Walking remains the most rewarding way to explore the city and its culture. London is filled with hidden treasures you’ll uncover by strolling around.

Discover your favorite places

London can feel emotionally intense, especially at first. Finding a comforting location helps – mine is a park near my residence. I visit it daily for a breather. My other favorite is the O2, a mere 10 minutes away, where I catch films weekly.

Establish your own comfort spots, whether it be a café, a bookstore, or a riverside bench, to unwind and recharge.

And make sure to explore!

Familiarize yourself with the areas you’ll frequent around campus and your home. Identify the nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and beloved food or coffee outlets.

Tour iconic landmarks during weekends. Explore your new city by visiting free museums, riding a red double-decker bus for the sights, and wandering aimlessly. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from getting slightly lost!

Final recommendations before diving into Imperial student life

Acquire a reusable bag – supermarkets and shops frequently charge for single-use alternatives.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas won’t keep you dry in gusty conditions.

Attend unique events – they create the best stories.

Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – that’s a common feeling at the beginning.

You don’t have to have everything planned out from day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I started at Imperial – so take a moment to breathe, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

For more insights into my experiences, <a href="https://www

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing When I first arrived in London, the city struck me as vast, noisy, and daunting.
