The city seemed vast, noisy, and bustling. Armed only with a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If this is your impending experience, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to help you adapt to your new life in London before your journey at Imperial kicks off, allowing you to relish the city to its fullest.

Whether you’re arriving weeks in advance or just in time for the term, here’s what I wish I had known upon my initial arrival.

Prioritize Finding Accommodation

Steer clear of costly hotel accommodations by arranging your housing early on. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. The prime locations disappear quickly! Aim for something in proximity to campus or a reliable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for morning classes.

Critical Life Administrative Tasks

Tackle these essentials as soon as you set foot in London:

Money transfers – As an international student, discover a trustworthy and cost-effective method for transferring funds from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.

UK SIM card – Obtain one right away to avoid being stranded without data in a new environment.

Bank account – Some banks necessitate a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and cater to students. You’ll require an account for everyday transactions and payments for part-time work.

Student ID card – This is vital for gaining access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it promptly.

Significance of the Initial Week at Imperial

Your inaugural week at Imperial is essential for your student journey. It’s when you will meet flatmates, classmates, and prospective friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and engage in activities that pique your interest.

Even if you feel introverted, make an effort to get involved. I established connections with some of my dearest friends during campus tours and society gatherings. Your first week establishes the foundation for your university experience.

Navigating London Wisely

During my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses and ended up walking nine kilometers throughout London. It was unforgettable but somewhat chaotic. Acquire your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel affordably on the Tube and buses.

Nevertheless, walking remains the optimal way to immerse yourself in the city and its culture. You’ll uncover hidden treasures by exploring on foot.

Identify Your Comfort Zones

London can be emotionally intense initially. Having a comforting spot aids – mine is a park near my residence where I visit every day to unwind. Another is the O2, just a 10-minute trek away, where I watch films weekly.

Find your own sanctuaries, be it a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to relax and rejuvenate.

Discover the City

Acquaint yourself with your new environment surrounding campus and your residence. Identify the nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred dining or coffee spots.

Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, ride a red double-decker bus, and roam without a specific agenda. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from navigating a little off course!

Concluding Tips for Your Start at Imperial

Utilize a reusable bag – shops impose charges for single-use bags.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas fall short in windy conditions.

Participate in unique events – they lead to memorable stories.

Don’t be concerned if you feel disoriented – it’s common for everyone at the start.

You don’t need to have everything sorted on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already further along than I was when I commenced my journey at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To delve deeper into my experiences, <a href="https://www.imperial.ac.uk/Stories/my-imperial-story-vijay/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" aria-label="https://www.imperial.ac.uk/Stories/my-imperial-story-vij

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping foot in London for the first time was quite a lot.
