Equipped solely with a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you’re about to embark on this journey, there’s no need to fret. Here’s some guidance to assist you in acclimating to your new life in London before commencing at Imperial, ensuring you make the most of the city.

Whether you land weeks in advance or just before the term begins, here’s the counsel I wish I had received when I arrived.

Secure accommodation

Prevent costly hotel expenses by organizing your lodging in advance. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone, as the prime choices get booked up quickly. Try to find a place close to your campus or a convenient Tube line to minimize lengthy travels to early morning lectures.

Essential life admin tasks

As you step into London, make sure to address these vital tasks:

Money transfers – for international students, discover a trustworthy, cost-effective method to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide better currency exchange rates.

UK SIM card – obtain one promptly to ensure you have data for navigation in a foreign city.

Bank account – some banks necessitate a UK address, but online banks like Monzo or Starling are fast and cater to students. An account is essential for daily expenses and part-time employment.

Student ID card – necessary for entering campus buildings, libraries, and obtaining student discounts. Secure it as soon as possible.

The significance of your initial week at Imperial

Your inaugural week at Imperial is vital for your student journey. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies, engaging in areas that pique your interest.

Even if you tend to be reserved, challenge yourself to join in. I did, and I connected with some of my closest friends through campus tours and society booths. Your first week establishes the foundation for your university experience.

Navigating London: smart travel

During my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers throughout London. It was a memorable experience, but not wise. Acquire your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel affordably via the Tube and buses.

Nevertheless, walking remains the most rewarding way to experience the city and its culture, unveiling hidden treasures as you explore.

Discover your comfort zones

Initially, London can feel emotionally taxing. Having a comfort zone helps – mine is a local park I visit daily to unwind. The O2, merely a 10-minute distance, is another favorite where I enjoy films weekly to de-stress.

Identify your own places, whether it’s a café, a bookstore, or a bench by the river, to relax and recharge in the bustling city.

Experience the city!

Familiarize yourself with the regions you frequent around campus and your residence. Locate your nearest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and preferred dining or coffee locations.

Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, hop on a red double-decker bus, and roam freely. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from moments of getting slightly lost!

Final recommendations before immersing in Imperial life

Carry a reusable bag – stores commonly charge for disposable ones.

Invest in a waterproof coat – umbrellas can be ineffective against wind.

Participate in unique events – they lead to fantastic stories.

Don’t fret if you feel disoriented – it’s a common feeling at the beginning.

You don’t have to have everything sorted on your first day.
