It was noisy, fast-moving, and slightly daunting. With a suitcase in one hand and Google Maps in the other, I wasn’t quite sure where to start. If you’re about to embark on this journey, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to assist you in acclimating to your new life in London before you commence at Imperial, allowing you to savor the city to the fullest.

Whether you’re getting to London a few weeks ahead or just before the semester kicks off, here’s the advice I wish I’d received upon my arrival.

First Order of Business: Arrange Accommodation

Avoid spending a fortune on hotel accommodations by securing your housing early. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as the most desirable options disappear quickly. Seek a place near your campus or at least close to a dependable Tube line – early morning lectures can be a hassle if you’re more than an hour away.

Essential Life Admin Duties

Once you’re in London, address these tasks swiftly:

Financial management – as an international student, discover a budget-friendly method to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.

UK SIM card – having data is vital for navigating a new city. Obtain a UK SIM card and data plan soon after your arrival.

Setting up a bank account – some banks need a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are efficient and accommodating for students. Open an account for day-to-day transactions and part-time job earnings.

Student ID card – this provides access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Retrieve it at your earliest convenience.

The Significance of Your First Week at Imperial

Your initial week at Imperial is vital for your student experience. It’s the time you’ll meet flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Get involved in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and join the ones that captivate you.

Even if you’re introverted, challenge yourself to engage. I did, and I formed friendships with some of my closest companions during spontaneous campus tours and society booths. Your first week sets the stage for your university adventure.

Travel Efficiently in London

During my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, resulting in me walking nine kilometers across London. It was hectic but unforgettable – don’t repeat my error. Get your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel the Tube and buses affordably.

Walking remains the optimal way to absorb the city and its culture. London boasts hidden treasures you’ll discover by exploring.

Identify Your Comfort Zones

London can be emotionally intense, particularly at first. Having a comfort zone is beneficial – for me, it’s the park close to my home where I retreat daily to unwind. My second spot is the O2, just a 10-minute distance, where I catch movies weekly to relax.

Discover your own comforting corners in the city, whether it’s a cafe, bookstore, or riverside bench. These spots are more beneficial than you might realize.

Explore and Experience

Familiarize yourself with the areas you’ll frequent around campus and your residence. Identify your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee places.

Explore famous landmarks and spend your weekends discovering your new city. Visit free museums, ride a red double-decker bus for the view, and wander aimlessly. Some of your finest memories will emerge from getting a bit lost!

Last-minute Tips Before Diving into Imperial Life

Utilize a reusable bag – shops often charge for single-use bags.

Get a waterproof jacket – umbrellas fall short against wind-driven rain.

Participate in unique events – they lead to great stories.

Don’t panic if you feel disoriented – it’s a common feeling at the beginning.

You don’t need to have everything sorted out on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial – so take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and kick off your London journey one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

For more about my

Written by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Arriving in London for the first time, the city felt vast.
