Stepping into London for the first time was a daunting experience. The city appeared immense, noisy, and bustling. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you\u2019re on the verge of this journey, fear not. Here\u2019s how to adjust to London before kicking off at Imperial, allowing you to relish your new urban lifestyle.<\/p>\n

Whether you\u2019re coming in early or just ahead of the term, here\u2019s the guidance I wish I had received when I first arrived.<\/p>\n

First priority: secure housing<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Dodge costly hotel fees by arranging your accommodation in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone has the same fortune, as prime options vanish swiftly. Seek a residence close to your campus or along a convenient Tube line to simplify those early morning travels.<\/p>\n

Administrative tasks: taking care of the essentials<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Upon arriving in London, tackle these necessities without delay:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 as an international student, discover a trustworthy and cost-effective method to receive funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM card \u2013 acquire a UK SIM card right away to ensure you have data for navigation.<\/li>\n
  • Bank account \u2013 while some banks may require a UK address, digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and accommodating for students. Open an account for everyday transactions and part-time job deposits.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID card \u2013 crucial for accessing campus facilities, utilizing the library, and unlocking student discounts. Retrieve it as soon as you can.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Your first week at Imperial is paramount<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    The initial week at Imperial holds great significance. It\u2019s your chance to meet flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to familiarize yourself with over 350 student-run clubs and societies. Even if you\u2019re reserved, challenge yourself to join in. I forged lasting friendships during campus tours and society showcases. This week establishes the foundation for your university adventure.<\/p>\n

    Getting around London: travel wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    During my first week, I found myself wandering nine kilometers across London due to confusion with the Tube and buses. It was unforgettable yet chaotic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to enjoy cheaper Tube and bus fares. Walking remains an excellent way to discover the city and uncover hidden treasures.<\/p>\n

    Identify your comfort zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can feel emotionally intense initially. Discover a comforting location, such as a park, caf\u00e9, bookstore, or riverside bench, where you can relax and rejuvenate. My go-to spots are a nearby park and the O2, where I unwind with weekly movie outings.<\/p>\n

    And remember to explore!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Get acquainted with your new environment surrounding both campus and home. Identify nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your preferred dining or coffee venues. Visit iconic landmarks, explore complimentary museums, and enjoy spontaneous strolls. Some of your finest memories will arise from wandering a bit off the beaten path.<\/p>\n

    Final thoughts before diving into<\/strong> Imperial student life<\/h3>\n

    • Bring a reusable bag \u2013 stores frequently charge for single-use ones.<\/li>\n
    • Invest in a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas aren\u2019t very effective during windy conditions.<\/li>\n
    • Join unexpected events \u2013 they often lead to great stories.<\/li>\n
    • Don\u2019t fret if you feel disoriented \u2013 that\u2019s a normal feeling at first.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      There\u2019s no need to have everything sorted out on day one. If you\u2019re reading this, you’re already better prepared than I was when I began at Imperial. Breathe deeply, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.<\/p>\n
