Equipped with merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt disoriented. If you find yourself in a similar situation, don’t be concerned. Here’s how to acclimatize to life in London before commencing your studies at Imperial, allowing you to relish your new city experience.

Whether you get here weeks in advance or right before the term starts, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

Secure your accommodation

Steer clear of expensive hotels by organizing your housing ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune, as prime locations are snatched up quickly. Target a place close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy travels for morning classes.

Essential life admin

Address these essentials shortly after arriving in London:

Money transfers – for international students, seek a trustworthy and cost-effective method for money transfers. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.

UK SIM card – navigating a new area can be challenging without data. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan promptly after your arrival.

Bank account – although certain banks need a UK address, digital banks like Monzo or Starling are quick and suitable for students. Open an account for daily use and part-time job deposits.

Student ID card – crucial for gaining entry to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as possible.

Your initial week at Imperial

Your first week is vital. You will meet your flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies. Even if you tend to be reserved, make an effort to get involved. I formed lasting friendships during spontaneous campus tours and society booths. This week will establish the foundation for your university experience.

Smart travel in London

At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses, leading to me walking nine kilometers across the city. It was an unforgettable yet hectic experience. Acquire your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel affordably. Walking remains an excellent way to navigate and uncover hidden treasures.

Identify your relaxing spots

London can feel daunting, particularly at the start. Having a sanctuary is beneficial. For me, it’s the park near my residence and the local O2 for weekly film nights. Discover your own relaxing spots, be it a cafe, bookstore, or riverside seating, to unwind and recharge.

Go out and explore!

Familiarize yourself with your campus and surrounding area. Locate the nearest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and preferred dining options. Tour iconic landmarks, visit free museums, and take in the scenery from a classic red double-decker bus. Some of your fondest moments will arise from a little misdirection!

Last-minute advice before beginning life at Imperial

Bring a reusable bag – shops frequently charge for disposable ones.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas often prove ineffective in windy conditions.

Participate in unusual events – they create memorable stories.

Don’t be alarmed if you feel disoriented – this is standard at the beginning.

You don’t have to have everything sorted from day one. If you’re reading this, you’ve already gained an advantage over where I was. Breathe deeply, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To discover more about my experiences, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under <a href="https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/category/applying

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Upon my initial arrival in London, I was struck by the city’s vastness and intensity, with its cacophony and rapid tempo.
