The city seemed vast, noisy, and incredibly fast-moving. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt lost on where to start. If you’re about to embark on this journey, don’t fret. Here’s how to set up your new life in London before starting at Imperial, so you can make the most of the city.

Whether you come weeks in advance or just before the semester kicks off, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

Secure Your Accommodation

Arrange your housing early to steer clear of pricey hotel fees. I was lucky, but not everyone is. The best accommodations get snapped up quickly, so try to find something near your campus or a reliable Tube line to avoid lengthy commutes for early classes.

Essential Life Admin

Upon your arrival in London, take care of these essentials:

Money transfers – if you’re an international student, discover a trustworthy method to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut offer beneficial rates.

UK SIM card – obtain one promptly to ensure you have data for navigation.

Bank account – digital banks like Monzo or Starling are quick and accommodating for students. You’ll require an account for transactions and part-time job payments.

Student ID card – vital for gaining access to campus, libraries, and student discounts. Secure it as soon as you can.

Your First Week at Imperial

Your inaugural week is significant. You’ll encounter flatmates, classmates, and possible friends. Engage in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re introverted, challenge yourself to get involved. I connected with some of my closest friends during campus tours and society events. This week lays the groundwork for your university experience.

Getting Around London: Smart Travel

At first, I struggled to comprehend the Tube or buses, so I trekked nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable but somewhat chaotic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for reduced travel costs. Walking remains a fantastic way to immerse yourself in the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Discover Your Comfort Zones

London can be emotionally taxing. Having a comfort zone is beneficial. Mine is a nearby park where I go to unwind. Another favorite is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I enjoy weekly films. Locate your own havens, whether a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to recharge and relax.

Venture Out!

Familiarize yourself with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Locate local supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and dining favorites. Explore iconic landmarks, free museums, and take a ride on a red double-decker bus for the views. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from spontaneous exploration.

Final Recommendations

Get a reusable bag – shops charge for single-use ones.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas aren’t effective in the wind.

Participate in unusual events – they create memorable stories.

Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s perfectly normal at first.

You don’t need every detail figured out on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I stood. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and commence your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To learn more about my experiences, check out my Imperial story.

By Guest Contributor

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

Tags: London, Student Life, Imperial

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Arriving in London for the first time was a lot to take in.
