The city felt vast, vibrant, and rapidly moving. With only a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I was uncertain about where to start. If you’re about to go through this, don’t be anxious. Here’s some guidance to assist you in getting acclimated to London before beginning at Imperial, allowing you to embrace your new urban life.

Whether you arrive weeks in advance or just prior to term commencement, here’s what I wish I had been aware of when I initially arrived.

Secure Accommodation

Steer clear of pricey hotel accommodations by organizing a place to stay ahead of time. I was lucky, but many aren’t. The prime options disappear quickly! Seek a residence close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize long travel times for early classes.

Administrative Tasks: Must-do Essentials

Once in London, tackle these essential tasks swiftly:

Money transfers – International students need a dependable and economical method to send money. Services like Wise or Revolut provide superior exchange rates.

UK mobile SIM – Navigating a new locale is challenging without data. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan soon after your arrival.

Bank account – Some banks need a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are swift and accommodate students well. Establish an account for daily financial dealings and payments from part-time employment.

Student ID – This is crucial for gaining access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.

The Significance of Your Initial Week at Imperial

Your first week at Imperial is vital. It’s when you meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Engage in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies and participate in what captivates your interest.

Even if you’re reserved, encourage yourself to get involved. I did and forged lasting friendships during campus tours and society activities. Your initial week establishes the atmosphere for your university journey.

Exploring London: Travel Wisely

During my initial week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube and buses, resulting in a nine-kilometer walk across London. It was an unforgettable experience, albeit hectic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for economical travel on the Tube and buses.

Walking remains a fantastic way to absorb the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Identify Your Comfort Zones

London can be intense. Having a comfort space is beneficial – mine is a local park where I go to unwind. The O2, a mere 10 minutes away, is another go-to for enjoying a movie.

Discover your own havens, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or riverside bench, to relax and recharge.

Discover!

Familiarize yourself with the commonly frequented areas around campus and your residence. Identify the nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred dining or coffee spots.

Check out renowned landmarks, visit free museums, and take a ride on a red double-decker bus. Some of your finest memories will originate from unplanned explorations.

Final Suggestions Before Embarking on Imperial Student Life

Utilize a reusable bag – Stores frequently charge for single-use bags.

Purchase a waterproof jacket – Umbrellas often fail against rain blown by the wind.

Participate in unique events – They create remarkable stories.

Don’t fret if you feel disoriented – It’s completely normal at the beginning.

You don’t need to have everything sorted on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already further along than I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

For more insights into my experiences, read my Imperial story.

<p class="imp-post__

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London was a lot to take in.
