The city appeared vast, noisy, and full of energy. Armed with just a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt a bit lost on where to begin. If you find yourself in a similar position, there’s no need to fret. Here’s some guidance to assist you in acclimatizing to London prior to your time at Imperial, enabling you to make the most of the city.

No matter if you arrive weeks in advance or right before the semester starts, here’s what I wish I had known upon my arrival.

Secure Your Accommodation

Book your housing early to steer clear of costly hotel stays. I was lucky, but not everyone shares this fortune, as the prime choices are snatched up quickly. Target a spot close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to lessen lengthy commutes for morning classes.

Administrative Essentials for Life

As soon as you land in London, focus on these crucial tasks:

Money transfers: As an international student, discover a trustworthy and budget-friendly method to send money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide better exchange rates.

UK SIM card: Acquire one immediately for connectivity and navigation in your new surroundings.

Banking: Some banks necessitate a UK address, but online banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and accommodating for students. Open an account for everyday expenses and payments from part-time employment.

Student ID card: This is vital for entering campus buildings, libraries, and benefitting from student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.

Your Initial Week at Imperial

Your first week is pivotal for shaping your student experience. Connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to explore more than 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re reserved, urge yourself to engage. I connected with lifelong friends during campus tours and society showcases. The first week lays the groundwork for your university experience.

Smart Travel in London

At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London. Prevent this by obtaining a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel. Nevertheless, walking remains an excellent way to see the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Establish Your Comfort Zones

London can be emotionally taxing. Discover a comforting location, such as a park, cafe, or bookstore, to unwind and recharge. For me, it’s a nearby park and the O2 for films. These spaces provide solace in an expansive city.

Discover the City

Get to know your new environment, including local grocery stores, pharmacies, parks, and restaurants. Check out iconic landmarks, complimentary museums, and relish the view from a red double-decker bus. Some of your most cherished memories will emerge from wandering with no specific agenda.

Final Recommendations

Carry a reusable bag to evade charges for single-use ones.

Invest in a waterproof coat; umbrellas falter in windy weather.

Participate in unique events for unforgettable experiences.

Don’t stress if you feel disoriented; it’s completely normal at first.

You don’t have to have everything mapped out from day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already in a better position than I was when I enrolled at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco trip at a time.

To gain further insights into my experiences, read my Imperial narrative.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under <a

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the first time was quite a lot to handle.
