The city seemed vast, bustling, and incredibly dynamic. I was unsure where to start, equipped only with a suitcase and Google Maps. If you’re about to go through this, don’t fret. Here are tips to help you get your new life in London sorted out before your journey at Imperial begins, allowing you to relish the city.

Regardless of whether you arrive weeks in advance or just before classes, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

Secure Your Accommodation

Evade pricey hotel fees by arranging your housing beforehand. I was lucky, but not everyone has that fortune. The prime choices vanish quickly, so strive to locate a residence near your campus or an efficient Tube line to minimize commute times.

Administrative Necessities

Address these essentials soon after landing in London:

Money Transfers – As an international student, look for a dependable way to send money from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.

UK SIM Card – Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan immediately to keep from getting lost without guidance.

Bank Account – Online banks such as Monzo or Starling are fast and student-friendly. Establish an account for daily expenses and part-time work revenues.

Student ID Card – This is essential for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.

Your Initial Week at Imperial

Your first week is vital. It’s the time to meet your flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Engage in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and organizations. Even if you’re reserved, make an effort to join in. I formed lasting friendships during campus tours and society showcases. This week establishes the foundation for your university experience.

Navigate London Wisely

During my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube and buses, resulting in a nine-kilometer trek across London. Avoid making this mistake. Acquire a Student Oyster card and request the 18+ discount for more affordable transportation. Walking is still a splendid way to explore and unveil hidden treasures.

Identify Your Comfort Zones

London can feel intense. Find a comforting location, like a park or a café, to unwind and recharge. My go-to spots are a nearby park and the O2 for films. These locations allow you to destress in the bustling metropolis.

Discover the City

Get to know the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Locate local grocery stores, pharmacies, parks, and your favorite eateries and coffee shops. Explore iconic sites, free museums, and savor what the city has to offer. Some of your finest memories will stem from a little getting lost.

Last-Minute Recommendations

Carry a reusable bag – retailers impose fees for single-use bags.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas can be ineffective in breezy conditions.

Join in on unconventional events – they create memorable stories.

Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – that’s perfectly normal initially.

You don’t have to have everything sorted out on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was. Take a deep breath, pick up your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To discover more about my journey, check out my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

<p class="imp-post__footer__tags

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the first time was a bit much.
