The metropolis felt enormous, bustling, and fast-paced. With just a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I found myself disoriented. If you’re on the brink of a comparable adventure, there’s no need to fret. Here’s some guidance to help you acclimate to your new life in London before kicking off your journey at Imperial, ensuring you make the most of the city.

Whether you’re arriving a few weeks in advance or right before the term kicks off, here’s the wisdom I wish had been imparted to me upon my arrival.

Top Priority: Lock Down Your Accommodation

Steer clear of exorbitant hotel prices by organizing your accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune, as the prime spots tend to get taken quickly. Target a location near your campus or a reliable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for early morning lectures.

Important Life Administration

Upon your arrival in London, quickly tackle these essentials:

Money Transfers – As an international student, seek a trustworthy and cost-effective method to transfer funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut present better exchange rates.

UK SIM Card – Navigating a new city can be challenging without data. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan shortly after you arrive.

Setting Up a Bank Account – Some banks may require a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and accommodating for students. Establish an account for everyday transactions and payments from part-time jobs.

Student ID Card – This is vital for gaining access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as possible.

Imperial’s Initial Week is Key

The first week at Imperial is crucial for your student experience. It’s the opportunity to meet flatmates, peers, and potential friends. Engage in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-driven clubs and societies and sign up for activities that pique your interest.

Even if you’re a bit reserved, make an effort to get involved. I did and met many of my closest friends during campus tours and society functions. This week lays the groundwork for your university experience.

Travel Wisely in London

At first, I found the Tube and buses baffling, which resulted in me walking nine kilometers across London. It was an unforgettable but chaotic experience. Don’t make the same mistake. Obtain your Student Oyster card for discounted fares on the Tube and buses.

Nevertheless, walking is an excellent way to discover the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Identify Your Comfort Zones

London can initially feel emotionally intense. Having a comfort zone can be beneficial – mine is a local park where I go daily to unwind. Another favorite is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I enjoy a movie weekly.

Identify your own spots, whether it’s a cafe, a bookstore, or a riverside bench, to relax and recharge.

Investigate and Uncover

Familiarize yourself with the areas you’ll often visit around campus and your residence. Locate your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred eateries or coffee shops.

Explore iconic landmarks, visit complimentary museums, ride a double-decker bus, and meander without a strict agenda. Some of your best memories will stem from getting a bit lost!

Final Recommendations Before Immersing in Imperial Life

Carry a reusable bag – shops charge for disposable ones.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas can’t withstand gusty conditions.

Attend quirky events – they provide memorable stories.

Don’t fret if you feel disoriented – it’s perfectly normal at the start.

You don’t have to have everything sorted on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was upon my arrival at Imperial. Take a moment, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco trip at a time.

To discover more about my experiences, <a href="https://www.imperial.ac.uk/Stories/my-imperial-story-vijay/" target="_blank" rel="noopener noreferrer" aria-label="https://www.imperial.ac.uk/Stories/my-imperial-story-vijay/ (

Written by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping foot in London for the first time was an exhilarating experience.
