The city appeared immense, noisy, and energetic. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I found myself feeling disoriented. If you’re about to undertake a similar adventure, there’s no need for concern. Here’s some guidance to assist you in acclimating to London before your journey at Imperial begins, enabling you to fully relish your new city life.

Whether you’re arriving weeks ahead or just in time for the start of term, here’s what I wish I had learned upon my arrival.

First Priority: Arrange Accommodation

Steer clear of the steep hotel prices by securing your accommodation in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone gets that fortune. The most desirable places get taken up quickly. Aim to locate a residence close to your campus or on a dependable Tube line to avoid lengthy commutes for early classes.

Crucial Life Admin

Once you land in London, address these essential tasks swiftly:

Money transfers – as an international student, discover an economical way to transfer funds from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut offer superior rates.

UK SIM card – indispensable for navigation and staying in touch. Obtain one right after your arrival.

Bank account – while some banks require a UK address, digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and friendly for students. Set up an account for your daily spending and part-time job earnings.

Student ID card – vital for gaining access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Retrieve it as soon as you can.

Imperial’s First Week: A Vital Period

Your initial week at Imperial is crucial. It’s when you’ll connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Take part in Welcome Week activities, dive into over 350 student-led clubs and societies, and enroll in those that pique your interest.

Even if you’re more reserved, challenge yourself to engage. I did, and it fostered friendships made during campus tours and society gatherings. This week sets the foundation for your university journey.

Travel Wisely in London

During my first week, I misinterpreted the Tube and buses, resulting in a nine-kilometer trek across London. It was an unforgettable yet chaotic experience. Instead, obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel on public transport.

Walking remains a fantastic way to navigate the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Find Your Comfort Zones

London can be emotionally intense, particularly at first. Discovering a comfort zone can be beneficial. For me, it’s a nearby park where I relax every day. The O2, only 10 minutes away, is another favorite destination for weekly movie outings.

Identify your own comfort areas, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or bench by the river. These locations provide invaluable opportunities for relaxation and rejuvenation.

Seek and Explore

Acquaint yourself with the frequently visited spots near your campus and residence. Identify local supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your preferred food or coffee shops.

Check out iconic landmarks, visit free museums, and enjoy the sights from a red double-decker bus. Some of your finest memories will emerge from spontaneous escapades.

Key Advice for Beginning at Imperial

Utilize a reusable bag – shops commonly charge for disposable ones.

Purchase a waterproof jacket – umbrellas aren’t effective against rain driven by the wind.

Participate in unique events – they often yield the most captivating stories.

Don’t stress if you feel confused at first – it’s a widespread feeling.

There’s no requirement to have everything sorted out on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. So take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and commence your London journey one bus ride and Tesco trip at a time.

To learn more about my experiences, check out my Imperial story.

Written by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping foot in London for the very first time was an astounding experience.
