With nothing but a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt a bit lost on where to begin. If you find yourself in a similar predicament, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to help you adjust to your new life in London prior to starting at Imperial, so you can relish the novelty of living in the city.

Whether you land a few weeks ahead of time or right before the term kicks off, here’s the advice I wished I had when I initially arrived.

First things first: secure your accommodation

To steer clear of pricey hotel bills, arrange your lodging ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone has that fortune, as the prime options disappear fast. Aim to locate a place in close proximity to campus or along a dependable Tube line – getting to early morning lectures is challenging if your place is over an hour away.

Life essentials: managing that essential paperwork

As soon as you get to London, there are several key aspects to address:

Money transfers – as an international student, you’ll need a dependable method to transfer funds from your home country. Services like Wise or Revolut provide better exchange rates.

UK SIM card – having data is vital for navigation in a new environment. Obtain a UK SIM card and data plan immediately upon arrival.

Bank account – some banks require a UK address, but digital banking options like Monzo or Starling are quick and accommodating for students. Establish a bank account for daily transactions and part-time job earnings.

Student ID card – this is crucial for gaining access to campus buildings, libraries, and student discounts. Make sure to collect it as soon as you can.

The initial week at Imperial is essential

Your first week at Imperial is vital for your student experience. It’s when you’ll meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-led clubs and societies and engage in activities that pique your interest.

Even if you’re feeling shy, do your best to take part. I did, and I ended up meeting some of my closest friends during campus tours and society events. Your first week will set the pace for your university adventure.

Getting around London: travel wisely

During my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, so I ended up walking nine kilometers across London. It was chaotic but unforgettable – don’t follow in my footsteps. Acquire your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to navigate London economically.

Walking remains a superb way to discover the city and its culture. You’ll uncover hidden treasures by strolling about.

Identify your comfort zones

London can feel emotionally intense, especially at the beginning. Having a comforting location is beneficial – mine is the park near my residence. I visit it daily to unwind and recharge. My second soothing spot is the O2, merely 10 minutes away, where I relax with a movie weekly.

Discover your personal comfort zones, whether it’s a café, a bookstore, or a riverside bench. These spaces can be more beneficial than you might realize.

And remember to explore!

Familiarize yourself with the areas you frequent around campus and your home. Locate nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your go-to spots for food or coffee.

Check out iconic landmarks, explore free museums, and ride a red double-decker bus. Some of your fondest memories will stem from moments of getting a little lost!

Final pointers before you jump into Imperial student life

Grab a reusable bag – shops often charge for single-use options.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas aren’t always effective against wind.

Be open to unusual events – they make for memorable stories.

Don’t be concerned if you feel disoriented – it’s a common experience at first.

You don’t need to have everything sorted out on the very first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial – so take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure.

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the first time was quite a lot to take in; the city seemed enormous, noisy, and bustling.
