Stepping into London for the first time was a bit daunting with its sheer size and rapid rhythm. I had no clear starting point, just a suitcase and Google Maps. If you find yourself in this situation, take heart. Here\u2019s some guidance to assist you in adjusting to your new life in London before your time at Imperial commences, allowing you to relish the city.<\/p>\n

No matter if you arrive weeks in advance or right before classes begin, here\u2019s the advice I wish I had received when I first got here.<\/p>\n

First things first: secure your living arrangements<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Steer clear of expensive hotel stays by securing your accommodation in advance. While I was lucky, not everyone shares that fortune, as the best choices vanish quickly. Try to reside near the campus or along a reliable Tube line to reduce lengthy commutes for your morning lectures.<\/p>\n

Life admin: taking care of important necessities<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Once you arrive in London, prioritize these necessities:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 as an international student, find an efficient and cost-effective method to send money from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide better currency exchange rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM card \u2013 acquire a UK SIM card and data plan promptly to ensure you have data for navigation.<\/li>\n
  • Setting up a bank account \u2013 digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and convenient for students, vital for transactions and receiving payments from part-time work.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID card \u2013 obtain this early to access campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Your first week at Imperial is vital<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Your initial week at Imperial is essential for meeting your flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies. Even if you feel shy, challenge yourself to take part; I forged lasting friendships during campus tours and society events. This week establishes the groundwork for your university experience.<\/p>\n

    Getting around London: travel wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    During my first week, I ended up walking nine kilometers across London due to my unfamiliarity with the Tube and buses. Prevent this by acquiring a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel. Walking remains a fantastic way to uncover and appreciate hidden gems within the city.<\/p>\n

    Identify your comfort zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can feel emotionally intense at first. Find a comforting locale, like a park or a favorite hangout, to decompress and recharge. My comfort spots include a local park and the O2 for films. Seek out your own places, whether it\u2019s a cafe, bookstore, or a tranquil bench by the river, to relax in the city.<\/p>\n

    And remember to discover!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Get acquainted with frequently visited areas near your campus and home. Identify local grocery stores, pharmacies, parks, and your go-to spots for food or coffee. Visit iconic landmarks, free museums, and enjoy what the city has to offer. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from impromptu escapades.<\/p>\n

    Last reminders before diving into<\/strong> Imperial student life<\/h3>\n

    • Carry a reusable bag to avoid charges for single-use bags.<\/li>\n
    • Consider purchasing a waterproof jacket since umbrellas might not hold up in windy weather.<\/li>\n

    • Don\u2019t stress if you feel a bit lost at first; it\u2019s a common feeling.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      You don\u2019t need to have it all planned out on day one. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re already ahead of where I stood when I commenced at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London journey one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.<\/p>\n
