Setting foot in London for the first time was quite a lot to take in. The city struck me as vast, noisy, and fast-moving. Armed with nothing but a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt a bit lost regarding where to kick things off. If you’re feeling the same way, don’t fret. Here\u2019s a guide to help you launch your new life in London before starting at Imperial, enabling you to enjoy the city.<\/p>\n

Whether you arrive several weeks in advance or just moments before the semester starts, here\u2019s the guidance I wish I had received.<\/p>\n

Secure housing<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Arrange your accommodation promptly to steer clear of expensive hotel expenses. I got lucky, but that\u2019s not the case for everyone. Prime spots vanish quickly! Search for housing close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize travel times for early classes.<\/p>\n

Administrative essentials to tackle<\/strong><\/h3>\n

After settling in London, make sure to cover these critical tasks:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 As an international student, find a trustworthy method for transferring funds. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide competitive exchange rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM card \u2013 Quickly obtain one for mobile data and navigation in an unfamiliar area.<\/li>\n
  • Bank account \u2013 While some banks may require a UK address, digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and cater to students. Open one for your transactions and part-time job payments.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID card \u2013 Indispensable for accessing campus facilities, using the library, and availing student discounts. Acquire it at your earliest convenience.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Your first week at Imperial: a vital period<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Your initial week is vital for getting to know your flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to explore over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re a bit reserved, challenge yourself to engage. I formed some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society activities. This week lays the groundwork for your university experience.<\/p>\n

    Travel smart in London<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    At first, I found the Tube and buses confusing and ended up walking nine kilometers across London. It was an unforgettable experience but somewhat hectic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and request the 18+ discount for more affordable travel. Exploring on foot remains an excellent way to uncover and experience hidden gems.<\/p>\n

    Establish your own comfort zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can sometimes feel like too much. Identify a comforting space, like a park, caf\u00e9, or bookstore, where you can unwind and rejuvenate. Personally, I enjoy a nearby park and the O2, where I like to relax weekly.<\/p>\n

    Discover the city<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Get acquainted with the surroundings near your campus and residence. Locate local supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your go-to places for meals or coffee. Explore iconic landmarks, free museums, and enjoy the city\u2019s vibe. Some of your fondest memories will come from those moments of wandering!<\/p>\n

    Final thoughts before embarking on your journey at Imperial<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    • Carry a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use bags.<\/li>\n
    • Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas can be ineffective during windy spells.<\/li>\n
    • Attend quirky events for memorable stories.<\/li>\n
    • Feeling lost is completely normal; don’t let it worry you initially.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      You don\u2019t need to have everything sorted out from day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I found myself. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.<\/p>\n
