The city appeared vast, noisy, and fast-paced. With just a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt disoriented. If you’re about to face this, don’t fret. Here’s how to adapt to your new life in London before you start at Imperial, enabling you to relish the city.

Whether you arrive weeks in advance or just before the term begins, here’s the counsel I wish I had received.

Prioritize Finding Accommodation

Avoid costly hotel durations by arranging accommodation early. I was lucky, but not everyone has the same fortune. The best options disappear quickly, so aim for a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes for early morning classes.

Key Life Administration

Once you’re in London, promptly handle these essentials:

Money transfers – as an international student, utilize apps like Wise or Revolut to sidestep unfavorable exchange rates.

UK SIM card – crucial for data and directions in a new environment.

Bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are swift and cater to students. You’ll need an account for transactions and part-time job payments.

Student ID card – vital for accessing campus amenities and student discounts.

The Significance of the First Week at Imperial

Your inaugural week is vital for meeting roommates, classmates, and future companions. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student clubs and societies. Even if you’re introverted, challenge yourself to engage. I developed close friendships during campus tours and society events. This week establishes the foundation for your university experience.

Navigating London Wisely

At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses and ended up walking nine kilometers across London. Prevent this by acquiring a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for reduced travel costs. Walking remains excellent for uncovering hidden treasures in the city.

Identify Your Comfort Zones

London can be daunting. Having a sanctuary helps – mine is a nearby park. I go daily to unwind. My alternate spot is the O2, where I view movies weekly. Discover your own venues like cafes, bookstores, or riverside seats to decompress.

Discover the City

Get acquainted with areas around your campus and residence. Identify local supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and preferred dining spots. Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, and enjoy impromptu strolls. Some of your fondest memories will arise from getting slightly lost.

Final Suggestions for Starting at Imperial

Utilize a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use ones.

Purchase a waterproof jacket, as umbrellas fall short in windy conditions.

Participate in unconventional events for unforgettable experiences.

Don’t stress if you feel unsettled initially; it’s perfectly fine.

You don’t need to have everything resolved on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already in a better position than I was. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and begin your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To learn more about my experiences, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

Tagged International Student, life at imperial

Written by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Arriving in London for the first time felt overwhelming.
