Stepping into London for the first time was a lot to take in. The city appeared vast, noisy, and incredibly dynamic. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I found myself disoriented. If you’re preparing for a similar experience, there’s no need to fret. Here are some tips to assist you in acclimating to London before your journey begins at Imperial, so you can relish in your new urban life.<\/p>\n

Whether you arrive several weeks early or just ahead of the term, here’s what I wish I had been aware of upon my arrival.<\/p>\n

First things first: secure accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Arrange your housing in advance to evade costly hotel fees. I was lucky, but that’s not the reality for everyone. The most desirable places are snatched up swiftly, so target something close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes.<\/p>\n

Administrative tasks: handling the necessary basics<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Once you reach London, make sure to manage these basic necessities:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 as an international student, seek a trustworthy, cost-effective method for transferring money. Services like Wise or Revolut provide competitive rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM card \u2013 obtain one promptly for data access and navigation in your new surroundings.<\/li>\n
  • Bank account \u2013 digital banking options such as Monzo or Starling are fast and cater well to students. An account will be required for everyday expenditures and wages from part-time jobs.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID card \u2013 vital for accessing campus, library facilities, and availing of student discounts. Secure yours at the earliest opportunity.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The initial week at Imperial is crucial<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Your first week at Imperial is critical. It\u2019s the time when you\u2019ll encounter flatmates, fellow students, and potential companions. Participate in Welcome Week to examine over 350 student clubs and societies. Even if you\u2019re reserved, make an effort to get involved; I made lasting friendships during campus tours and society gatherings. This week establishes the foundation for your university journey.<\/p>\n

    Moving around London: travel wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    During my first week, I covered nine kilometers across London due to my confusion with the Tube and buses. Prevent this by obtaining a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for reduced travel expenses. Walking, however, remains an excellent way to explore and uncover hidden treasures around the city.<\/p>\n

    Discover your personal comfort zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can feel daunting, so it\u2019s important to identify a comfort zone. Mine is a nearby park where I go to unwind. Another favorite is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I catch movies weekly. Find your own favorite places, whether it\u2019s a cozy caf\u00e9 or a bookshop, to relax and recharge.<\/p>\n

    And don\u2019t forget to venture out!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Get acquainted with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Identify your closest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and preferred dining spots. Tour famous landmarks, check out free museums, and take a ride on a red double-decker bus. Some of your most memorable experiences will arise from getting a bit lost.<\/p>\n

    Final pointers before plunging into<\/strong> Imperial student life<\/h3>\n

    • Carry a reusable bag \u2013 stores impose charges for single-use ones.<\/li>\n
    • Purchase a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas often fail in the wind.<\/li>\n
    • Participate in unique events \u2013 they yield great stories.<\/li>\n
    • Don\u2019t stress about feeling disoriented \u2013 it\u2019s a common experience at first.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      You don\u2019t need to have everything mapped out on day one. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re already ahead of where I was at the beginning of my journey at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco stop at a time.<\/p>\n
