Arriving in London for the first time, I was struck by its vastness and rapid pace. With nothing but a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt disoriented. If you are about to embark on this journey, there’s no need to stress. Here\u2019s my guidance to assist you in adapting to your new life in London prior to starting at Imperial, allowing you to truly relish the city.<\/p>\n

Whether you\u2019re arriving well ahead of time or just before the term begins, here\u2019s the counsel I wish I had received.<\/p>\n

Steer clear of pricey hotel accommodations by organizing your housing ahead of time. I got lucky, but not everyone does. The prime options vanish quickly, so seek a place close to your campus or on a dependable Tube line to sidestep lengthy commutes.<\/p>\n

Upon your arrival, focus on these necessary tasks:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 as an overseas student, discover a reliable and cost-effective method for transferring money. Apps like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM card \u2013 critical for data and navigation in a new environment. Acquire one without delay.<\/li>\n
  • Bank account \u2013 digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and student-oriented. Open an account for transactions and payments from part-time jobs.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID card \u2013 important for accessing campus amenities, libraries, and discounts for students. Get it as soon as you can.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Your First Week at Imperial<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Your initial week is pivotal for your student experience. Connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 clubs and societies. Even if you’re reserved, challenge yourself to get involved. I formed lasting friendships during campus tours and society showcases. This week establishes the foundation for your university adventure.<\/p>\n

    Smart Travel in London<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    At first, I was bewildered by the Tube and buses and ended up walking nine kilometers across London. It was unforgettable but hectic. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to reduce travel costs. Nonetheless, walking remains a splendid way to discover and uncover hidden treasures.<\/p>\n

    Identify Your Comfort Zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can sometimes feel overwhelming. Discover a cozy spot, such as a park, caf\u00e9, bookstore, or a bench by the river, to unwind and recharge. For me, it\u2019s a local park and the O2 for films.<\/p>\n

    Get Out and Explore!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Acquaint yourself with the areas surrounding your campus and residence. Identify supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and preferred eateries. Explore famous sights, free museums, and indulge in unplanned adventures. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from serendipitously getting a bit lost.<\/p>\n
