The city appeared immense, noisy, and bustling. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you’re facing a similar situation, there’s no need for concern. Here’s some guidance to assist you in adapting to your new life in London prior to your studies at Imperial, enabling you to take full advantage of the city.

Whether you arrive a few weeks in advance or right before the term starts, here’s the advice I wish I had received upon my arrival.

First things first: secure your living arrangements

Arrange your housing early to avoid pricey hotel bookings. I was lucky, but not everyone has that fortune, as the best accommodations vanish swiftly. Seek out a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes for early classes.

Essential administrative tasks: handling necessary basics

Once you reach London, attend to these necessities swiftly:

Funds transfers – as an international student, discover a budget-friendly method to transfer money from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide advantageous exchange rates.

UK SIM card – having mobile data is vital for navigation. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan shortly after your arrival.

Bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and student-friendly. Open an account for daily transactions and part-time employment payments.

Student ID card – this is essential for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it at your earliest convenience.

Your initial week at Imperial is crucial

Your first week at Imperial is vital for your overall student experience. It’s the moment to meet flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led organizations and activities that pique your interest.

Even if you’re shy, challenge yourself to engage. I did, and formed some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society gatherings. Your first week establishes the groundwork for your university life.

Getting around London: smart travel

During my initial week, I struggled with the Tube and buses, leading to a nine-kilometer walk across London. It was hectic yet unforgettable. Avoid my error by acquiring a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for reduced travel costs on the Tube and buses.

Walking remains an excellent way to navigate the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Identify your comfort zones

London can feel emotionally overwhelming, particularly at first. Having a comforting place is beneficial – mine is a local park where I unwind. Another favorite is the O2, just a 10-minute walk away, where I enjoy movies weekly.

Discover your own places, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or riverbank bench, to relax and rejuvenate.

And remember to explore!

Acquaint yourself with common areas surrounding campus and your residence. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee spots.

Visit iconic sites, check out free museums, ride a classic red double-decker bus, and wander aimlessly. Some of your finest memories may come from being a little lost!

Final thoughts before immersing yourself in Imperial student life

Get a reusable bag – stores usually charge for single-use ones.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas are ineffective against winds.

Attend unique events – they lead to great stories.

Don’t fret if you feel disoriented – it’s normal initially.

There’s no need to have everything sorted out on day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a moment to breathe, grab your Oyster card, and start your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To learn more about my experiences,

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the very first time was an intense journey.
