Stepping into London for the first time felt intimidating. The city appeared vast, noisy, and overwhelming. Armed with just a suitcase and Google Maps, I experienced a sense of disorientation. If you\u2019re on the verge of this adventure, don\u2019t fret. Here\u2019s some guidance to help you acclimatize to your new life in London prior to your commencement at Imperial, enabling you to relish your time in the city.<\/p>\n

Regardless of whether you arrive weeks in advance or just before the semester kicks off, here\u2019s what I wish I had been aware of when I first came here.<\/p>\n

Locate your accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Book your housing early to steer clear of pricey hotel costs. I was lucky, but that\u2019s not the case for everyone. The prime choices vanish quickly! Aim for a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes for early classes.<\/p>\n

Crucial administrative tasks<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Upon your arrival in London, tackle these essentials without delay:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 as an international student, seek an economical way to send money from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide better exchange rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM card \u2013 having data is vital for navigation. Obtain a UK SIM card and data plan promptly after your arrival.<\/li>\n
  • Bank account \u2013 some banks may require a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick to set up and student-friendly. Create an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID card \u2013 this allows access to campus buildings, libraries, and student discounts. Collect it as early as possible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The significance of your first week at Imperial<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Your initial week holds great importance for your student journey. It\u2019s when you\u2019ll meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you\u2019re introverted, make an effort to join in. I made some of my nearest friends during campus tours and society gatherings. This week shapes the foundation of your university experience.<\/p>\n

    Navigate London wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    During my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, resulting in me walking nine kilometers throughout London. It was chaotic yet unforgettable. Avoid my blunder by acquiring a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for more affordable Tube and bus fares. Nevertheless, walking remains an excellent avenue to explore the city and uncover hidden treasures.<\/p>\n

    Establish your comfort zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can be quite overwhelming, particularly at the beginning. Having a comfort area aids in acclimatization. For me, it\u2019s the park near my residence where I go daily to unwind. My second favorite place is the O2, just a 10-minute walk away, where I catch movies weekly. Identify your own retreats, like a caf\u00e9, bookstore, or riverside bench, to relax and rejuvenate.<\/p>\n

    Dive into the city<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Familiarize yourself with the neighborhoods around your campus and residence. Find your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee spots. Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, take a ride on a red double-decker bus, and meander aimlessly. Some of your fondest memories may come from the times you get a bit lost!<\/p>\n

    Final pointers for beginning at Imperial<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    • Bring a reusable bag \u2013 stores frequently charge for single-use ones.<\/li>\n
    • Invest in a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas aren\u2019t very effective in windy weather.<\/li>\n
    • Participate in unusual events \u2013 they often lead to the best stories.<\/li>\n
    • Don\u2019t stress if you feel uncertain \u2013 it\u2019s a common experience at the start.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      It\u2019s not necessary to have everything sorted on the first day. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re already ahead of where I was when I commenced my journey at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure, one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.<\/p>\n
