The city seemed enormous, noisy, and fast-paced. With just a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I was uncertain where to start. If you’re feeling the same way, there’s no need to fret. Here’s how to acclimate to London life before your time at Imperial begins, allowing you to appreciate the city.

Whether you arrive weeks prior or right before the term starts, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

Secure a Living Arrangement

Steer clear of pricey hotels by organizing your accommodation ahead of time. I was fortunate, but not everyone shares that luck. The prime choices disappear quickly! Seek a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes.

Essentials: Life Admin

Take care of these essentials shortly after your arrival in London:

Money transfers – use platforms like Wise or Revolut for economical transfers as an international student.

UK SIM card – obtain one swiftly to gain access to data and navigation.

Bank account – sign up with digital banks like Monzo or Starling for quick and student-friendly services. Use it for daily expenses and part-time employment.

Student ID card – crucial for accessing campus facilities, utilizing the library, and receiving student discounts. Acquire it at the earliest opportunity.

Your Initial Week at Imperial

Your inaugural week at Imperial is vital. Connect with flatmates, peers, and future acquaintances. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 clubs and societies. Even if you’re introverted, challenge yourself to get involved. I forged close friendships during impromptu tours and society booths. This week establishes the foundation for your university experience.

Smart Travel Around London

In my first week, I trekked nine kilometers through London. It was unforgettable but hectic. Don’t replicate my error. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for reduced fares on the Tube and buses. Walking, however, is a fantastic way to uncover the city’s secret treasures.

Identify Your Comfort Spaces

London can be emotionally taxing. Discover a comforting location. My refuge is a park close to my home, where I go daily to rejuvenate. Another spot is the O2, just a 10-minute distance, where I enjoy movies weekly. Seek out your own areas, like a cafe or bookstore, where you can unwind and refresh.

Discover!

Familiarize yourself with the neighborhoods surrounding campus and your home. Locate local grocery stores, pharmacies, parks, and favorite eateries. Explore iconic landmarks, free museums, and hop on a red double-decker bus. Some of your fondest memories will arise from wandering a bit off course.

Final Insights for Life at Imperial

Carry a reusable bag – retailers impose fees for single-use bags.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas struggle against the wind.

Participate in unique events – they provide wonderful stories.

Don’t panic if you feel disoriented – it’s a common sensation at first.

You don’t have to have everything sorted out on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure, one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

For more on my experiences, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Arriving in London was a whirlwind experience.
