Stepping foot in London for the first time was a lot to take in. The city seemed vast, noisy, and bustling. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt lost on where to start. If you find yourself in a similar boat, don\u2019t panic. Here\u2019s my guidance to help you acclimate before you embark on your journey at Imperial, allowing you to savor your new city life.<\/p>\n

Whether you arrive weeks in advance or right as the term kicks off, here\u2019s the guidance I wished I had received.<\/p>\n

Secure accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Steer clear of pricey hotel accommodations by booking your place early. I was lucky, but that\u2019s not the case for everyone. The prime options disappear fast, so look for something near the campus or close to a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for those early classes.<\/p>\n

Admin essentials: getting things in order<\/strong><\/h3>\n

After arriving in London, tackle these essentials without delay:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 as an international student, consider using apps like Wise or Revolut for economical money transfers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
      \n
    • UK SIM card \u2013 secure one right away to ensure you have data for navigation in an unfamiliar city.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
        \n
      • Bank account \u2013 digital banks like Monzo or Starling offer swift and student-friendly services. Open an account for everyday transactions and payments from part-time jobs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
          \n
        • Student ID card \u2013 necessary for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as possible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          The initial week at Imperial is key<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          Your first week at Imperial is crucial for shaping your student experience. Meet your flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to learn about over 350 clubs and societies, and engage in activities that capture your interest.<\/p>\n

          Even if you tend to be shy, encourage yourself to get involved. I formed close friendships during campus tours and society showcases. Your inaugural week will set the pace for your university journey.<\/p>\n

          Exploring London: travel wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          During my initial week, I struggled with the Tube and buses, resulting in me walking nine kilometers across London. While it was a memorable experience, it was also chaotic. Get your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel affordably on public transport.<\/p>\n

          Walking remains the best method to immerse yourself in the city and its culture. Uncover hidden gems by taking leisurely strolls.<\/p>\n

          Identify your comfort zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          London can feel emotionally intense at the outset. Identify a comforting spot, like a nearby park, to unwind and recharge. My secondary comfort zone is the O2, where I relax weekly while watching a film.<\/p>\n

          Find your own places, whether they be a cafe, bookstore, or riverside bench, to help you feel comfortable in the city.<\/p>\n

          Adventure awaits!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          Get familiar with the areas you frequently visit around campus and your home. Locate nearby supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your go-to food or coffee spots.<\/p>\n

          Explore iconic landmarks, visit free museums, hop on a red double-decker bus, and wander without a specific plan. Some of your most cherished memories may come from moments of getting a little lost!<\/p>\n

          Last pointers before immersing yourself in Imperial student life<\/strong><\/h3>\n
            \n
          • Bring a reusable bag \u2013 stores often charge for disposable ones.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
              \n
            • Invest in a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas don\u2019t hold up well against the wind.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

              • Be open to unusual events \u2013 they can lead to great stories.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                • Don\u2019t fret if you feel disoriented \u2013 it\u2019s a common feeling at first.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                  You don\u2019t need to have everything sorted out on your first day. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.<\/p>\n
