With just a suitcase in one hand and Google Maps in the other, I felt uncertain about where to begin. If you find yourself in a similar situation soon, don’t fret. Here’s my guidance to assist you in acclimating to your new life in London before beginning at Imperial, allowing you to fully relish the experience of being a newcomer in the city.

Regardless of whether you arrive some weeks early or just before the term starts, here’s the advice I wish I had received upon my arrival.

Top Priority: Ensure Accommodation

Prevent spending hundreds of pounds nightly on a hotel by booking your accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as the top choices get booked quickly! Strive to find a location near your campus or at least near a dependable Tube line, as early morning classes can be challenging if your commute exceeds an hour.

Essential Life Management

Upon your arrival in London, focus on these tasks:

Money Transfers – If you’re an international student like me, you’ll seek a trustworthy and cost-effective way to transfer money from your home country. Services like Wise or Revolut assisted me in avoiding poor exchange rates.

UK SIM Card – Without data, navigating will be difficult, which is not ideal in a new area or country! Get a UK SIM card and data plan as soon as possible after arriving.

Bank Account Establishment – Some banks require a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are quick and cater to students. Set up a bank account promptly for everyday transactions and to receive payments for any part-time work during your studies.

Student ID Card – This card provides access to campus facilities, the library, and student discounts at various locations. Obtain your student ID card at your earliest convenience.

The Significance of Your First Week at Imperial

Your first week at Imperial is critical for your student journey. It’s when you will meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and enroll in activities that pique your interest.

Even if you are reserved, make an effort to engage. I did, and I met some of my closest friends during spontaneous campus tours and society booths. Your initial week at Imperial shapes the atmosphere for your university experience.

Effective Travel in London

In my initial week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, so I walked nine kilometers across London to explore. It was chaotic yet unforgettable – don’t replicate my error. Acquire your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel on the Tube and buses more economically.

Nevertheless, walking remains the best method to immerse yourself in the city and its culture. London is filled with numerous hidden gems you will uncover by strolling around.

Identify Your Comfort Zones

London can feel emotionally overwhelming, especially at the beginning. Discovering a comfort zone is advantageous – for me, it’s the park near my residence. I visit daily to unwind and refresh. My second comfort location is the O2, merely 10 minutes away, where I watch movies weekly to relax.

Find your own comforting spots, whether a café, bookstore, or riverside bench. Having a space to unwind and recharge is more beneficial than you might realize.

Explore and Savor!

Get acquainted with frequently visited locations around your campus and residence. Identify your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite eateries for food or coffee.

Visit renowned landmarks, discover free museums, ride a red double-decker bus for the view, and wander without a specific plan. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from getting a bit lost!

Final Recommendations Before Diving into Imperial Life

Utilize a reusable bag – supermarkets and shops frequently charge for single-use bags.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas often prove ineffective against wind-driven rain.

Participate in unusual events – they often lead to the most captivating stories.

Don’t worry if you feel disoriented – everyone feels that way initially.

There’s no need to have everything figured out on the first day.
