The city seemed enormous, noisy, and incredibly fast. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt a bit lost on where to start. If you’re experiencing something similar, there’s no need to fret. I’ve gathered some tips to help you get acclimated to London before your studies at Imperial commence, allowing you to fully enjoy your new life in the city.

No matter if you arrive early or just in time for term, here are the insights I wish I’d had when I first landed here.

Secure accommodation

Arrange your living situation well in advance to steer clear of pricey hotel fees. I was fortunate, but that’s not the case for everyone. Try to find a residence close to your campus or an efficient Tube line to minimize long travels for early classes.

Important administrative tasks

Once you arrive in London, take care of these vital matters:

Money transfers – as an international student, discover a dependable means of receiving funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut offer favorable exchange rates.

UK SIM card – obtain one right away for data and navigation in your new surroundings.

Bank account – digital banking options such as Monzo or Starling are quick and student-friendly. Open an account for everyday purchases and payments from part-time jobs.

Student ID card – crucial for entering campus buildings, libraries, and accessing student discounts. Acquire it promptly.

Your inaugural week at Imperial

Your first week is vital for connecting with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-led clubs and societies. Even if you’re somewhat reserved, make the effort to join in. I formed lasting friendships during random campus explorations and society events. This week will shape your university experience.

Smart travel in London

At first, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or bus systems, so I ended up walking nine kilometers across London. It was an unforgettable but hectic experience. Get your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for cheaper travel. Still, walking remains a wonderful way to uncover and appreciate the city’s hidden treasures.

Establish your favorite spots

London can be a lot to handle. Identify a cozy spot, such as a park or a café, where you can unwind and recharge. For me, it’s a local park and the O2 for movies. These places provide a respite in the bustling city.

Discover the city

Familiarize yourself with the neighborhoods around your campus and residence. Locate nearby grocery stores, pharmacies, parks, and your preferred eateries. Explore iconic landmarks, free museums, and immerse yourself in the city. Many of your fondest memories will come from unplanned adventures.

Final advice for starting at Imperial

Carry a reusable bag – shops impose charges for single-use bags.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas won’t suffice in windy weather.

Participate in unique events – they lead to entertaining stories.

Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s common at the beginning.

You don’t have to have everything sorted on the first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already a step ahead. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To find out more about my journey, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

Tagged <a href="https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/international-st

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the first time was quite a lot to take in.
