The city felt expansive, boisterous, and bustling. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I was overwhelmed. If you’re about to embark on this experience, take heart. Here’s how to acclimate to London before your journey at Imperial, allowing you to appreciate the city.

Whether you arrive ahead of schedule or just before classes commence, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

First and foremost: secure accommodation

Arrange your housing early to steer clear of pricey hotel bills. I was lucky, but not everyone enjoys the same fortune. Seek out a residence close to your campus or along a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for morning lectures.

Administrative tasks: organizing essential elements

Upon your arrival in London, tackle these vital tasks:

Money transfers – as an international student, discover a trustworthy method for transferring funds. Platforms like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.

UK SIM card – obtain one right away for data and navigation in your new surroundings.

Bank account – digital banks like Monzo or Starling offer quick and student-friendly options. Open an account for everyday transactions and payments from part-time jobs.

Student ID card – crucial for accessing campus amenities, libraries, and discounts for students. Secure it as soon as you can.

Your first week at Imperial is paramount

Your inaugural week at Imperial is vital. Connect with your flatmates, peers, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week events, discover over 350 clubs and societies, and engage in what sparks your interest.

Even if you consider yourself shy, challenge yourself to join in. I established close friendships during campus tours and society gatherings. The tone of your university experience is set during this initial week.

Getting around London: travel wisely

In my first week, I trekked nine kilometres across London due to confusion with the Tube and buses. Prevent this by acquiring a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount to travel economically.

Walking remains a fantastic method to explore and uncover hidden treasures in London.

Discover your favorite spots

London can be emotionally intense. Identify a comforting location, like a park, café, or bookstore, to unwind and recharge. For me, it’s a nearby park and the O2 for films.

And remember to venture out!

Get to know the areas surrounding your campus and residence. Identify supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and your go-to eateries.

Visit iconic landmarks, explore complimentary museums, ride a double-decker bus, and roam aimlessly. Some of your fondest memories may stem from those moments of getting a bit lost.

Final pointers before you immerse yourself in Imperial student life

Utilize a reusable bag – retailers impose charges for single-use ones.

Purchase a waterproof jacket – umbrellas aren’t reliable in windy conditions.

Engage in unconventional events – they yield memorable stories.

Don’t fret if you feel disoriented – it’s common at the outset.

You don’t need to have everything sorted by day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I started. Breathe deeply, grab your Oyster card, and begin your London narrative one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To learn more about my journey, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorized under Applying to Imperial

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping foot in London for the very first time was a whirlwind of sensations.
