Equipped with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I found myself uncertain about my next moves. If you’re facing a similar situation, there’s no need to stress. Here’s some guidance to assist you in acclimating to London prior to commencing at Imperial, enabling you to savor your new urban life.

Regardless of whether you arrive weeks in advance or just before the semester kicks off, here’s the guidance I wish had been shared with me upon my arrival.

Secure Your Living Arrangements

Prevent expensive hotel stays by arranging your lodging early. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone, as the top choices get booked quickly. Try to find accommodation close to your campus or a reliable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes for early classes.

Key Administrative Tasks

When you arrive, focus on these essential tasks:

Money Transfers – As an international student, seek a trustworthy and cost-effective method to move funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut provide better exchange rates.

UK SIM Card – Obtain a UK SIM card and data plan immediately to effectively navigate your new environment.

Bank Account Opening – Digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and cater to students. Having a UK bank account is vital for daily transactions and part-time job salaries.

Student ID Card – This card provides access to campus facilities, libraries, and student discounts. Acquire it as soon as possible.

The Significance of Your First Week at Imperial

Your initial week at Imperial is pivotal for your student experience. It’s the perfect opportunity to meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week activities, discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies, and join in on what sparks your interest.

Even if you’re feeling introverted, challenge yourself to take part. I forged some of my closest friendships during spontaneous campus tours and society stalls. Your first week lays the groundwork for your university experience.

Navigate London Smartly

During my first week, I covered nine kilometers across London due to my confusion regarding the Tube and bus systems. Prevent this by acquiring your Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel.

Walking remains a fantastic method to explore the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Identify Your Comfort Zones

Initially, London can be emotionally intense. Having a relaxation spot is beneficial; mine is a nearby park I visit daily to unwind. The O2, just 10 minutes away, serves as my secondary comfort place for weekly movie outings.

Find your own comfort zones, whether a café, a bookstore, or a bench by the river, to unwind and recharge.

Discover the City

Acquaint yourself with your new area, including local supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and favorite dining or coffee locations.

Visit iconic landmarks, explore free museums, hop on a red double-decker bus, and roam without a specific plan. Some of your fondest memories will stem from getting a little lost!

Additional Suggestions for Starting at Imperial

Utilize a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use alternatives.

Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas aren’t effective against strong winds.

Join unusual events for unforgettable stories.

Don’t be alarmed if you initially feel disoriented; it’s completely normal.

You don’t have to have everything under control on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when commencing at Imperial. Take a breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To learn more about my journey, check out my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London at first was quite daunting due to its expanse and rapid tempo.
