The city seemed vast, noisy, and bustling. Armed with just a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt a bit lost on how to start. If you’re about to embark on this journey, there’s no need to fret. Here’s my guidance to help you adjust to London and make the most of your time at Imperial.

Whether you arrive well in advance or just before the term kicks off, these are the tips I wish someone had shared with me upon my arrival.

Secure your accommodation

Arrange your housing promptly to steer clear of pricey hotel expenses. I was lucky, but not everyone is. Search for a residence close to your campus or on a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy travel for early lectures.

Essential life organization

Once you’re settled in London, tackle these important tasks swiftly:

Money transfers – as an international student, seek a trustworthy and cost-effective method for transferring funds. Services like Wise or Revolut provide competitive exchange rates.

UK SIM card – acquire one as soon as possible for internet access and navigation in your new environment.

Bank account – digital banking options such as Monzo or Starling are quick and ideal for students. Establish an account for transactions and payments from part-time work.

Student ID card – obtain it without delay for access to campus facilities, the library, and student discounts.

Your first week at Imperial matters

Your initial week is vital for connecting with flatmates, classmates, and future companions. Get involved in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-led clubs and groups. Even if you are reserved, challenge yourself to engage. I formed strong friendships during campus tours and at society booths. This week is a pivotal part of your university experience.

Smart travel in London

At first, I struggled to navigate the Tube or buses and ended up walking nine kilometers across the city. Sidestep this by getting a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for reduced travel expenses. Nonetheless, walking remains a fantastic way to uncover hidden delights in the city.

Identify your favorite spots

London’s intensity can be daunting, so seek out a comforting nook. Mine is a local park where I can unwind. The O2, only 10 minutes away, is another place I enjoy to watch a movie. Find your own spaces, like a cozy cafe or bookstore, where you can relax and recharge.

Dive into the city

Get to know the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Identify your closest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and eating spots. Explore well-known landmarks, free museums, and take a ride on a double-decker bus for a panoramic view. Some of your most cherished memories will stem from unplanned explorations.

Final pointers for starting at Imperial

Carry a reusable bag to avoid fees for one-time use options.

Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas aren’t suitable in windy weather.

Participate in unique events to gather unforgettable stories.

Don’t stress if you feel disoriented; it’s perfectly normal at the beginning.

You don’t have to have everything sorted on the very first day. You’re already ahead just by reading this. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

For more insights into my journey, check out my Imperial story.

By Guest Contributor

Categorized under Applying to Imperial

Tagged International Student, <a href="https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/life

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the very first time was quite a lot to take in.
