With just a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt disoriented. If you find yourself in a similar situation, worry not. Here are some tips on how to adjust to life in London before you begin at Imperial, allowing you to relish the city.

Whether you come early or right before the term starts, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

Secure your living arrangements

Book your accommodation early to steer clear of costly hotels. I was lucky, but options tend to vanish quickly. Try to choose a spot close to campus or along a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes.

Administrative essentials

Take care of these vital tasks shortly after your arrival:

Money transfers – as an international student, consider using apps like Wise or Revolut for favorable exchange rates.

UK SIM card – crucial for navigation and staying in touch. Get one straight away.

Bank account – digital banking options such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and friendly for students. Open one for managing transactions and receiving part-time job payments.

Student ID card – necessary for utilizing campus services and receiving discounts. Obtain it quickly.

Your initial week at Imperial

Your first week is essential for networking and discovering clubs and societies. Join Welcome Week events to meet new people and pursue your passions.

Even if you feel a bit reserved, take part. I made lasting friendships during campus tours and society gatherings. This week lays the groundwork for your university experience.

Be smart about traveling in London

At first, I trekked nine kilometers through London because I was puzzled by the public transportation system. Steer clear of this by acquiring a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for more economical travel.

Walking, however, is still fantastic for uncovering hidden treasures and soaking in the atmosphere.

Identify comforting spots

London can feel intense, so locate a comforting location. Mine includes a nearby park and the O2 for cinema outings. Find your own relaxing havens, like a café or a bookstore.

Discover the city

Get to know local supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and preferred eateries. Explore iconic landmarks, free museums, and enjoy spontaneous strolls. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from wandering around.

Additional advice

Carry a reusable bag to avoid extra fees for single-use options.

Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas can be ineffective in gusty weather.

Participate in unique events for unforgettable moments.

Don’t stress if you feel a bit lost at first; that’s completely normal.

You don’t need to have everything sorted out the moment you arrive. You’re already making progress by reading this. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one step at a time.

For more about my journey, check out my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

Tagged International Student, life at imperial

Written by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the first time was daunting with its vastness and rapid tempo.
