Stepping into London for the very first time was quite a lot to take in. The city appeared immense, bustling, and fast-paced. With merely a suitcase and Google Maps, I was uncertain about where to start. If this is your upcoming experience, don\u2019t fret. Here\u2019s some guidance to assist you in adapting to London before your journey at Imperial begins, allowing you to embrace your new urban life.<\/p>\n

Regardless of whether you arrive weeks before or just prior to term commencement, here\u2019s the advice I wish I had received upon my arrival.<\/p>\n

First and foremost: secure your living arrangements<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Prevent costly hotel expenses by arranging your accommodation in advance. I was lucky, yet not everyone shares the same fortune, as the best options are taken quickly. Look for a place near your campus or on a dependable Tube line to minimize long journeys to early morning lectures.<\/p>\n

Administrative tasks: organizing your essential needs<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Upon your arrival in London, make these tasks a priority:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 as an international student, seek a trustworthy and economical method to transfer funds from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    • UK SIM card \u2013 navigating a new city is tricky without data. Obtain a UK SIM card and data plan as soon as you arrive.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
        \n
      • Setting up a bank account \u2013 some banks necessitate a UK address, but digital banks like Monzo or Starling are quick to adapt and friendly to students. A bank account is essential for everyday transactions and payments from part-time jobs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        • Student ID card \u2013 this is vital for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and availing student discounts. Get it as soon as possible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          Your initial week at Imperial is crucial<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          Your first week at Imperial is key to your student journey. Meet your flatmates, classmates, and future friendships. Engage with Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and join those that pique your interest.<\/p>\n

          Even if you’re reserved, challenge yourself to get involved. I forged some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society activities. Your first week lays the groundwork for your university experience.<\/p>\n

          Exploring London: travel wisely<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          During my initial week, I found the Tube and bus system confusing, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was an unforgettable yet chaotic experience. Get your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel the Tube and buses economically.<\/p>\n

          Walking remains the finest way to absorb the city and its culture. You\u2019ll uncover hidden treasures by meandering around.<\/p>\n

          Identify your comforting spaces<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          Initially, London can be emotionally taxing. Finding a comfort zone is beneficial \u2013 mine is a park close to my residence. I visit daily to relax. My secondary spot is the O2, just ten minutes away, where I enjoy movies weekly to unwind.<\/p>\n

          Discover your own comfort areas, be it a cafe, a bookstore, or a bench by the river. These spaces are invaluable for unwinding and rejuvenating.<\/p>\n

          And don\u2019t overlook the exploration!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

          Familiarize yourself with the areas you\u2019ll frequently visit around campus and home. Identify your nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred food or coffee locations.<\/p>\n

          Explore renowned landmarks, visit free museums, ride a red double-decker bus for the picturesque view, and wander aimlessly. Some of your fondest memories will stem from getting a little lost!<\/p>\n

          Final pointers before you plunge into<\/strong> Imperial student life<\/h3>\n

          • Acquire a reusable bag \u2013 shops frequently charge for single-use bags.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
              \n
            • Invest in a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas are often useless in windy conditions.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

              • Participate in unique events \u2013 they provide excellent stories.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                • Don\u2019t panic if you feel disoriented \u2013 everyone does at first.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

                  You don\u2019t need to have everything figured out on the first day. If you\u2019re reading this, you are already ahead of where I was when I commenced at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco trip at a time.<\/p>\n
