The city was enormous, noisy, and bustling. With nothing but a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I felt adrift. If this is your upcoming experience, stay calm. Here are some tips to assist you as you adapt to your new life in London before commencing at Imperial, enabling you to genuinely appreciate the city.

No matter if you arrive weeks in advance or right as the term starts, here’s the advice I wish I had received.

Secure Accommodation First

Prevent costly hotel expenses by arranging your accommodation early. I was lucky, but not everyone shares that fortune since the prime locations are snatched up quickly. Strive to find a place near your campus or a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy travel times for early morning lectures.

Key Life Administration

After arriving in London, address these tasks without delay:

Money Transfers – As an international student, discover an economical way to transfer funds from your home country. Services like Wise or Revolut provide advantageous rates.

UK SIM Card – Ensure you have internet access for navigation by obtaining a UK SIM card as soon as possible.

Bank Account Opening – Some banks necessitate a UK address, but online banks like Monzo or Starling are quick and cater to students. Set up an account for everyday expenses and part-time job payments.

Student ID Card – This is vital for utilizing campus resources, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it at the earliest opportunity.

Maximize Your Initial Week at Imperial

Your first week is pivotal for your student journey. It’s the time when you will meet flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-run clubs and societies. Even if you’re reserved, challenge yourself to join in. I found some of my closest companions during campus tours and society gatherings. This week establishes the mood for your university experience.

Navigating London Effectively

During my first week, I covered nine kilometers across London due to misunderstandings with public transport. Learn from my error by acquiring a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for more affordable Tube and bus fares. Walking remains a splendid way to explore and uncover the city’s hidden treasures.

Identify Your Comfort Zones

London can be emotionally taxing, especially during the initial period. Having a comfort zone is beneficial – mine is a nearby park I visit every day to relax. The O2, just 10 minutes away, is another hotspot for films and downtime. Find your own retreats, like a cafe, bookstore, or riverside bench, to unwind and recharge.

Discover the City

Get to know the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Identify your nearest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, as well as favorite dining or coffee locations. Explore iconic sites, visit free museums, and relish the view from a red double-decker bus. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from spontaneous escapades.

Final Suggestions for Beginning at Imperial

Carry a reusable bag to evade fees for single-use ones.

Invest in a waterproof jacket since umbrellas are useless in windy weather.

Join unique events for unforgettable experiences.

Don’t be concerned if you feel disoriented at first – it’s completely normal.

You don’t need to have everything sorted out on the very first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of my situation when I began at Imperial. Inhale deeply, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco trip at a time.

To discover more about my experiences, read my story at Imperial.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under <a href="https

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London felt like a whirlwind to me at first.
