Arriving in London for the first time was a bit daunting. The city seemed vast, noisy, and energetic. Equipped with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you’re about to go through this, don\u2019t worry. Here\u2019s my guidance to assist you in settling down in London before your time at Imperial begins, allowing you to enjoy your new surroundings.<\/p>\n

No matter if you come weeks early or just in time for the term, here\u2019s what I wish I had known when I first arrived.<\/p>\n

Secure accommodation<\/strong><\/h3>\n

To steer clear of costly hotel expenses, arrange your housing early. I was lucky, but not everyone has that fortune, as the best places get booked fast. Try to find a home close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes for early classes.<\/p>\n

Essential tasks: things to handle<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Once you land in London, address these important matters quickly:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 International students require an affordable means to send money from their home country. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM card \u2013 Without data, getting around a new city can be challenging. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan soon after you arrive.<\/li>\n
  • Bank account \u2013 Certain banks demand a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and suited for students. Establish an account for daily expenses and payments from part-time jobs.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID card \u2013 This is essential for accessing campus facilities, libraries, and enjoying student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Your first week at Imperial matters<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Your initial week at Imperial is vital for your experience as a student. It’s the time to connect with flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 clubs and societies and engage in activities that interest you.<\/p>\n

    Even if you’re reserved, encourage yourself to take part. I did, and I found some of my closest friends during campus tours and society gatherings. This week establishes the foundation for your university life.<\/p>\n

    Getting around London: smart travel<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    During my first week, I struggled to understand the Tube and buses, resulting in a nine-kilometer walk across London. It was an unforgettable, albeit hectic, experience. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel around the city economically.<\/p>\n

    Exploring on foot is still a wonderful way to uncover the hidden treasures of London.<\/p>\n

    Identify your safe spaces<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can feel emotionally intense, especially at the beginning. Having a comforting place is beneficial \u2013 for me, it\u2019s a local park where I go each day to unwind. Another favorite spot is the O2, just a 10-minute walk away, where I relax weekly watching a movie.<\/p>\n

    Discover your own spots of comfort, be it a caf\u00e9, a bookstore, or a bench by the river, to help you relax and recharge.<\/p>\n

    Discover the city!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Familiarize yourself with your campus and the nearby areas. Identify the closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining locations.<\/p>\n

    Check out iconic landmarks, visit free museums, ride on a classic red double-decker bus, and explore aimlessly. Some of your fondest memories may arise from slightly losing your way.<\/p>\n

    Final pointers before diving into life at Imperial<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    • Carry a reusable bag \u2013 Supermarkets impose charges for single-use bags.<\/li>\n
    • Invest in a waterproof jacket \u2013 Umbrellas can be ineffective in windy weather.<\/li>\n
    • Participate in unique events \u2013 They provide fantastic stories.<\/li>\n
    • Don\u2019t stress if you feel disoriented \u2013 It\u2019s a common experience at first.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      You don\u2019t have to have everything figured out from day one. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.<\/p>\n
