The city appeared immense, noisy, and bustling. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt lost on where to start. If this is your situation, fret not. Here’s a guide to help you adjust to London prior to your time at Imperial, enabling you to relish your new life in the city.

Whether you’re arriving weeks in advance or just before your course commences, here’s the guidance I wish I had received.

Secure Accommodation First

Avoid high hotel costs by arranging housing in advance. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. The most desirable places fill up fast, so aim for options close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize long commutes for those early classes.

Crucial Life Admin

Once you arrive, focus on these essential tasks:

Money transfers – International students need an affordable method to send money. Services like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.

UK SIM card – Ensure you have data for navigation. Obtain a UK SIM card and data plan without delay.

Bank account – Some banks may require a UK address, but online banks like Monzo or Starling are convenient and student-oriented. Open an account for everyday transactions and part-time job payments.

Student ID card – This is essential for accessing campus buildings, libraries, and student deals. Retrieve it as soon as you can.

Make Your First Week at Imperial Count

Your initial week is crucial for shaping your student experience. Meet your flatmates, fellow students, and possible friends. Participate in Welcome Week to check out over 350 clubs and societies. Even if you feel shy, strive to engage. I connected with many of my closest friends during campus tours and society events. This week establishes the foundation for your university adventure.

Navigate London Smartly

At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses, resulting in a nine-kilometer trek across London. It was an unforgettable but disorganized experience. Get your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable transportation. Walking remains an excellent way to uncover and enjoy hidden treasures.

Identify Your Comfort Zones

London can feel intense, particularly at the outset. Having a comfort zone is beneficial. Mine is a local park where I go to unwind. The O2 is another favorite spot for me, where I catch movies every week. Discover your own places, whether it’s a café, bookstore, or a bench by the river, for relaxation and rejuvenation.

Discover the City

Get to know the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Find your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred dining spots. Explore famous landmarks, free museums, and enjoy spontaneous strolls. Some of your most cherished memories will come from wandering a bit off the beaten path.

Additional Tips for Starting at Imperial

Utilize a reusable bag to avoid charges for single-use bags.

Consider purchasing a waterproof jacket; umbrellas won’t fare well in strong winds.

Participate in unique events for unforgettable experiences.

Don’t panic if you feel disoriented; it’s entirely normal initially.

You don’t have to have everything figured out right away. If you’re reading this, you’re already further along than I was. Take a moment, grab your Oyster card, and kick off your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

Discover more about my experiences, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

Tagged

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the first time felt like quite a lot to handle.
