With merely a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I found myself uncertain about where to start. If you’re about to face this, don’t fret. Here’s how to acclimate to London before beginning your journey at Imperial, ensuring you make the most of the city.

Regardless of whether you arrive weeks ahead or just before classes start, here’s the guidance I wish someone had provided to me.

Secure Accommodation First

Steer clear of expensive hotel stays by arranging accommodation in advance. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. Try to reside near the campus or a dependable Tube line to prevent lengthy commutes to morning lectures.

Crucial Life Admin

When you arrive, focus on these key tasks:

Money transfers – as an international student, use apps such as Wise or Revolut for better exchange rates.

UK SIM card – crucial for navigation and staying in touch. Obtain one as soon as possible.

Bank account – digital banks like Monzo or Starling are quick to set up and very student-friendly. Create an account for transactions and part-time job wages.

Student ID card – vital for campus entry, library usage, and student discounts. Make sure to collect it without delay.

The Significance of Your First Week at Imperial

Your initial week is essential for connecting with flatmates, peers, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to investigate over 350 student clubs and societies. Even if you’re reserved, take part; I discovered close friends during campus tours and society stalls. This week establishes the foundation for your university experience.

Navigate London Wisely

At first, I walked nine kilometers across London because I was confused about the Tube and buses. Prevent this by acquiring a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel. Nevertheless, walking remains a fantastic way to uncover hidden gems in the city.

Discover Your Relaxation Spots

London can be intense. Having a go-to spot is beneficial; mine is a nearby park where I relax every day. The O2, only 10 minutes away, is another preferred location for movies and downtime. Identify your own places, be it a coffee shop, bookstore, or riverside bench, to unwind and refresh.

Explore the City

Get to know the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Identify your nearest grocery store, pharmacy, parks, and favorite eateries or cafés. Explore iconic landmarks, free museums, and enjoy the view from a red double-decker bus. Some of your most cherished memories will come from wandering without a set plan.

Final Suggestions for Your Start at Imperial

Carry a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use ones.

Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas don’t hold up against the wind.

Join unique events for unforgettable experiences.

Don’t stress if you feel a bit lost; it’s normal at first.

You don’t have to have everything sorted on day one. Just reading this puts you ahead. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

For more about my experiences, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

Tagged International Student, life at imperial

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the first time was quite an experience, with its enormity, buzz, and speed.
