The city seemed enormous, bustling, and incredibly fast. Armed with just a suitcase and Google Maps, I wasn’t sure how to start. If you find yourself in a similar boat, don’t fret. Here are some tips to help you acclimatize to London before your journey at Imperial begins, enabling you to embrace your new city adventure.

Whether you get here weeks ahead of schedule or just before the term kicks off, here’s what I wish I had been aware of upon my arrival.

Secure Accommodation First

Prevent costly hotel expenses by arranging your accommodation as soon as possible. I was lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. The prime choices vanish quickly, so search for a spot close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy travel times for early classes.

Key Life Admin Tasks

Upon your arrival in London, focus on completing these tasks:

Money Transfers – As an international student, find a budget-friendly method to transfer funds from home. Platforms like Wise or Revolut provide favorable rates.

UK SIM Card – Obtain a UK SIM card right away for data and navigation in your new environment.

Bank Account – While some banks demand a UK address, digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and accommodating for students. Open an account for your everyday expenses and part-time job income.

Student ID Card – This card is crucial for accessing university buildings, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as quickly as possible.

Maximize Your First Week at Imperial

Your inaugural week is essential for shaping your student journey. Connect with flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-run clubs and societies. Even if you’re feeling shy, challenge yourself to get involved. I formed lasting friendships during campus tours and society gatherings. This initial week will set the precedent for your university experience.

Navigate London Wisely

At first, I struggled with understanding the Tube and buses and ended up walking nine kilometers across London. It was a memorable experience but quite hectic. Get a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for reduced fares on the Tube and buses. Walking is still a fantastic way to uncover the city and find hidden treasures.

Identify Your Comfort Zones

London can be emotionally taxing. Having a comforting place is beneficial. For me, it’s the park near my residence where I go daily to unwind. My second refuge is the nearby O2, where I enjoy catching a movie. Seek out your own spots like cafes, bookstores, or benches by the river to relax and recharge.

Discover the City

Get to know the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and home. Identify the nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and your favorite eateries. Visit iconic landmarks, check out free museums, take a ride on a red double-decker bus, and explore aimlessly. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from losing your way a bit!

Final Thoughts for Starting at Imperial

Carry a reusable bag to avoid fees for single-use options.

Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas aren’t very helpful in gusty weather.

Join unusual events for captivating stories.

Don’t stress if you feel disoriented; it’s a common experience initially.

You don’t need to have it all figured out from day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and set forth on your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To read more about my experiences, check out my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

<p class="imp-post__footer__categories

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Arriving in London for the first time was quite a lot to take in.
