When I landed in London, I was struck by its vastness, sound, and speed. With only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt lost on where to start. If you\u2019re feeling the same way, don\u2019t fret. Here\u2019s how to acclimatize to life in London before your time at Imperial begins, allowing you to relish your new city adventure.<\/p>\n

Whether you show up weeks before or just ahead of the term, here\u2019s the guidance I wish I had when I arrived.<\/p>\n

First task: secure your lodging<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Prevent expensive hotel stays by booking your lodging in advance. I got lucky, but that\u2019s not the case for everyone. Try to reside close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to avoid lengthy commutes for early classes.<\/p>\n

  • Bank account establishment \u2013 digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are rapid and accommodate students well. You\u2019ll require an account for everyday transactions and payments from part-time work.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID card \u2013 crucial for entry to campus, library access, and student discounts. Obtain it as early as you can.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Your initial week is vital for your experience as a student. Connect with flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-operated clubs and societies. Even if you\u2019re reserved, get involved. I made lasting friendships during campus visits and society gatherings. Your first week lays the foundation for your university experience.<\/p>\n

    Travel wisely in London<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses, causing me to wander nine kilometers across London. Prevent this by obtaining your Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for affordable travel. Walking still allows for the discovery of hidden treasures in the city.<\/p>\n

    Identify your favorite places<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can be daunting. Identify a cozy spot, such as a park, cafe, bookstore, or a bench by the river, to unwind and recharge. My favorites include a local park and the O2 for movie outings.<\/p>\n

    Discover the city<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Acquaint yourself with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Find your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining spots. Tour iconic landmarks, free museums, and embrace spontaneous strolls. Some of your finest memories will arise from a bit of wandering.<\/p>\n
