With only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt lost on where to start. If you’re feeling the same way, don’t fret. Here’s how to acclimatize to life in London before your time at Imperial begins, allowing you to relish your new city adventure.

Whether you show up weeks before or just ahead of the term, here’s the guidance I wish I had when I arrived.

First task: secure your lodging

Prevent expensive hotel stays by booking your lodging in advance. I got lucky, but that’s not the case for everyone. Try to reside close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to avoid lengthy commutes for early classes.

Crucial life tasks

Upon arrival, tackle these vital tasks:

Money transfers – as an international student, look for a trustworthy and economical way to send money from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide competitive rates.

UK SIM card – essential for navigation and keeping in touch. Acquire one soon after your arrival.

Bank account establishment – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are rapid and accommodate students well. You’ll require an account for everyday transactions and payments from part-time work.

Student ID card – crucial for entry to campus, library access, and student discounts. Obtain it as early as you can.

Significance of your first week at Imperial

Your initial week is vital for your experience as a student. Connect with flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-operated clubs and societies. Even if you’re reserved, get involved. I made lasting friendships during campus visits and society gatherings. Your first week lays the foundation for your university experience.

Travel wisely in London

At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses, causing me to wander nine kilometers across London. Prevent this by obtaining your Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for affordable travel. Walking still allows for the discovery of hidden treasures in the city.

Identify your favorite places

London can be daunting. Identify a cozy spot, such as a park, cafe, bookstore, or a bench by the river, to unwind and recharge. My favorites include a local park and the O2 for movie outings.

Discover the city

Acquaint yourself with the neighborhoods surrounding your campus and residence. Find your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining spots. Tour iconic landmarks, free museums, and embrace spontaneous strolls. Some of your finest memories will arise from a bit of wandering.

Concluding advice for starting at Imperial

Utilize a reusable bag to dodge charges for single-use ones.

Invest in a waterproof jacket; umbrellas can’t withstand windy weather.

Participate in unique events for unforgettable experiences.

Don’t fret if you feel disoriented; it’s common at the beginning.

You don’t have to have everything planned out on your first day. If you’re reading this, you’re already ahead of where I was. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey one bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.

To find out more about my experiences, read my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

Tagged <a href="https://blogs.imperial.ac.uk/student-blogs/tag/international-student/"

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing When I landed in London, I was struck by its vastness, sound, and speed.
