The city seemed vast, noisy, and bustling. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I felt lost on where to start. If you find yourself in a similar boat, don’t fret. Here’s some guidance to help you acclimate to London prior to beginning at Imperial, ensuring you can revel in your new urban life.

No matter if you land weeks ahead of time or just before classes kick off, here’s the counsel I wish I had received upon my arrival.

First and foremost: secure your living arrangements

To sidestep pricey hotel fees, arrange your housing in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as the finest options tend to vanish quickly. Seek accommodation close to your campus or a reliable Tube line to circumvent lengthy travels for morning classes.

Administrative tasks: handling the crucial necessities

Upon your arrival in London, tackle these necessities without delay:

Money transfers – as an international student, discover a dependable and cost-effective method to transfer funds. Platforms like Wise or Revolut provide favorable exchange rates.

UK SIM card – obtain one right away for data and navigation in your new surroundings.

Bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are efficient and cater to students. Establish an account for transactions and part-time employment earnings.

Student ID card – vital for campus entry, library access, and student perks. Retrieve it at the earliest opportunity.

Your inaugural week at Imperial is key

Your initial week at Imperial is fundamental for your overall student experience. It’s the time to meet roommates, fellow students, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and engage in activities that pique your interest.

Even if you are introverted, challenge yourself to take part. I formed some of my closest friendships during campus tours and society gatherings. Your first week will lay the foundation for your university adventure.

Getting around London: travel wisely

In my first week, I was unfamiliar with the Tube or buses, leading me to walk nine kilometers across London. It was an unforgettable yet chaotic experience. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to navigate the city affordably.

Walking remains an excellent way to immerse yourself in the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Establish your comfort zones

London can initially feel daunting. Having a safe haven is beneficial – mine is a local park where I unwind. The O2, only 10 minutes away, is another go-to destination for films and relaxation.

Identify your own comfortable spots, be it a cafe, bookstore, or a bench by the river, to rejuvenate and reset.

And remember to venture out!

Explore the neighborhood surrounding your campus and residence. Identify the nearest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and your preferred eateries or coffee spots.

Tour popular landmarks, visit free museums, and enjoy a ride on a double-decker bus. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from impromptu escapades.

Final pointers before plunging into Imperial student life

Carry a reusable bag – retailers often impose fees for single-use bags.

Invest in a waterproof jacket – umbrellas can be ineffective in gusty weather.

Participate in unique events – they lead to interesting anecdotes.

Don’t stress if you feel disoriented – it’s completely normal at the start.

You won’t have everything sorted by day one. If you’re reading this, you’re ahead of where I was when I commenced at Imperial. Inhale deeply, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London narrative one bus ride and supermarket visit at a time.

To learn more about my experiences, check out my Imperial story.

<p class="imp-post__footer__byline

Authored by Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the first time was a breathtaking experience.
