The sheer size, noise, and rapid tempo of the city were striking. With just a suitcase and Google Maps in hand, I found myself feeling disoriented. If you find yourself in a similar boat, there’s no need for concern. Here’s how to get acclimated to London before your time at Imperial begins, allowing you to relish your new surroundings.

Whether you’re coming in early or just in time for the term, here are some tips I wish I had received.

Secure your accommodation first

Steer clear of expensive hotels by sorting out your accommodation in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone has that same fortune. Look for a place close to your campus or a dependable Tube route to steer clear of long travels for early morning classes.

Key administrative tasks to take care of

Once you’ve landed in London, concentrate on these essential tasks:

Handle money transfers – as an international student, utilize apps like Wise or Revolut for competitive exchange rates.

Acquire a UK SIM card – crucial for navigation and staying in touch.

Establish a bank account – digital banks such as Monzo or Starling offer quick setup and are student-friendly.

Obtain your student ID card – it provides access to campus amenities and student discounts.

Maximize your initial week at Imperial

Your first week is vital for connecting with flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Take part in Welcome Week activities and check out over 350 student-led clubs and societies.

Even if you consider yourself introverted, make an effort to join in. I formed close friendships during campus tours and society events. Your initial week sets the groundwork for your university experience.

Navigate London wisely

At first, I struggled with the Tube and buses, resulting in a lengthy nine-kilometer trek across London. Prevent this by acquiring a Student Oyster card and applying for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel options.

Walking remains an excellent way to see the city and uncover hidden treasures.

Identify your relaxing spots

London can feel intense, so find a calming place. For me, it’s a local park and the O2 for film screenings. Discover locations like cafes, bookstores, or riverside benches where you can unwind and recharge.

Discover the city

Get to know the surroundings of both your campus and residence. Pinpoint supermarkets, pharmacies, parks, and go-to dining locations.

Check out iconic landmarks, enjoy free museums, and embark on spontaneous outings. Some of your most cherished moments will arise from moments of being slightly lost!

Final advice for beginning at Imperial

Carry a reusable bag to eliminate charges for single-use ones.

Purchase a waterproof jacket – umbrellas aren’t very useful in strong winds.

Participate in unique events for unforgettable moments.

Don’t fret if you feel disoriented – it’s completely normal at the outset.

You don’t have to have it all figured out from day one. If you’re reading this, you’re already on the right path. Take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and embark on your London journey one bus ride and Tesco trip at a time.

To learn more about my journey, check out my Imperial story.

By Guest Blogger

Categorised under Applying to Imperial

Tagged International Student, life at imperial

By Vijay (India), MSc Strategic Marketing Stepping into London for the first time was truly a lot to take in.
