Stepping into London for the very first time was a breathtaking experience. The city seemed vast, noisy, and bustling. With just a suitcase and Google Maps at my disposal, I felt uncertain about where to start. If you’re about to undertake a similar adventure, don’t fret. Here\u2019s some guidance to assist you in settling down in your new life in London prior to beginning at Imperial, so you can fully appreciate the city.<\/p>\n

Whether you arrive a few weeks in advance or right before the term kicks off, here\u2019s the advice I wish someone had shared with me upon my arrival.<\/p>\n

Secure Accommodation First<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Steer clear of expensive hotel stays by arranging accommodation ahead of time. I was lucky, but not everyone has that fortune. The prime options get snatched up quickly, so aim for a location close to your campus or a dependable Tube line to minimize lengthy commutes to early morning lectures.<\/p>\n

Important Life Tasks<\/strong><\/h3>\n

When you arrive in London, make it a priority to complete the following tasks:<\/p>\n

  • Money Transfers \u2013 As an international student, discover a cost-efficient method to transfer funds from home. Applications like Wise or Revolut provide advantageous exchange rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM Card \u2013 Get a UK SIM card as soon as possible to have data for navigation.<\/li>\n
  • Bank Account \u2013 Some banks require a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are fast and student-friendly. Open an account for daily transactions and payments from part-time work.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID Card \u2013 This is essential for gaining access to campus establishments, libraries, and student discounts. Obtain it as soon as you can.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Significance of the Initial Week at Imperial<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Your first week at Imperial holds great importance for your student life. It\u2019s a chance to meet flatmates, classmates, and potential friends. Participate in Welcome Week to check out over 350 student-run clubs and societies. Even if you feel shy, encourage yourself to take part; I formed lasting friendships during campus tours and society happenings. This week will set the foundation for your university experience.<\/p>\n

    Smart Travel in London<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    At first, I struggled with the Tube or buses, which led me to trek nine kilometers across London. While it was an unforgettable experience, it’s not the best approach. Obtain your Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount for more affordable travel. Walking is still an excellent way to unearth hidden treasures in the city.<\/p>\n

    Discover Your Comfort Zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can feel emotionally intense at the start. Having a favorite spot is beneficial; mine is a local park where I go daily to unwind. My second spot is the O2, just 10 minutes away, where I relax with a movie weekly. Find your own places, whether a caf\u00e9, bookstore, or riverside bench, to recharge and ground yourself.<\/p>\n

    Get to Know the City<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Acquaint yourself with the neighborhoods around campus and your residence. Identify the closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and preferred food or coffee outlets. Explore famous sites, visit free museums, and enjoy the ride on a classic red double-decker bus. Some of your most cherished memories will arise from wandering a bit off the beaten path!<\/p>\n

    Last Tips for Starting at Imperial<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    • Utilize a reusable bag to sidestep charges for single-use ones.<\/li>\n
    • Purchase a waterproof jacket; umbrellas won\u2019t hold up against the wind.<\/li>\n

    • Don\u2019t stress if you feel disoriented; it\u2019s typical at the beginning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      You don\u2019t need to have everything sorted out on the first day. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. Take a moment to breathe, grab your Oyster card, and start your London journey one red bus ride and Tesco visit at a time.<\/p>\n
