Stepping into London for the first time was an astonishing experience. The city felt immense, bustling, and fast-moving. Armed with only a suitcase and Google Maps, I found myself disoriented. If you’re about to undertake a similar adventure, there’s no need to be anxious. Here\u2019s some guidance to assist you in adjusting to your new life in London before your time at Imperial begins, enabling you to fully embrace the experience of being a newcomer in the city.<\/p>\n

Whether you\u2019re arriving a few weeks in advance or right before the semester kicks off, here\u2019s the advice I wish I had received during my initial arrival.<\/p>\n

First things first: secure your housing<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Steer clear of high hotel costs by arranging your accommodation in advance. I was lucky, but not everyone is, as the best choices get taken swiftly. Aim to find a location close to your campus or near a dependable Tube line \u2013 lengthy commutes for early classes can be difficult.<\/p>\n

Administrative tasks: sorting out the necessary essentials<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Upon your arrival in London, focus on completing these essential tasks:<\/p>\n

  • Money transfers \u2013 As an international student, you’ll require a dependable and affordable method for transferring funds from home. Services like Wise or Revolut can assist you in avoiding poor exchange rates.<\/li>\n
  • UK SIM card \u2013 Navigating a new city is tough without data. Acquire a UK SIM card and data plan shortly after your arrival.<\/li>\n
  • Setting up a bank account \u2013 Some banks may require a UK address, but digital banks such as Monzo or Starling are quick and student-friendly. Establish an account for daily transactions and any part-time job earnings.<\/li>\n
  • Student ID card \u2013 This is crucial for accessing campus facilities, the library, and receiving student discounts. Collect it as soon as possible.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The initial week at Imperial is the most significant<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Your first week at Imperial is vital for your student experience. It’s the perfect opportunity to connect with flatmates, classmates, and future friends. Engage in Welcome Week to discover over 350 student-led clubs and societies and register for activities that pique your interest.<\/p>\n

    Even if you tend to be reserved, make an effort to get involved. I did, and I met some of my closest friends during campus tours and society gatherings. Your first week sets the tone for your entire university experience.<\/p>\n

    Getting around London: travel smartly<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    During my first week, I struggled with understanding the Tube and buses, resulting in a nine-kilometer walk across London. It was an unforgettable but hectic experience \u2013 don\u2019t follow in my footsteps. Obtain a Student Oyster card and apply for the 18+ discount to travel economically on the Tube and buses.<\/p>\n

    Walking remains an excellent way to explore the city and uncover hidden treasures.<\/p>\n

    Identify your comfort zones<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    London can be emotionally intense, particularly at first. Having a comforting spot is beneficial \u2013 mine is the park near my residence, where I unwind daily. My second location is the O2, just a 10-minute walk away, where I enjoy movies weekly.<\/p>\n

    Discover your own comforting spaces, whether it\u2019s a caf\u00e9, bookstore, or riverside bench. These places can offer essential relaxation.<\/p>\n

    And remember to discover!<\/strong><\/h3>\n

    Familiarize yourself with the areas you\u2019ll frequently visit around your campus and home. Identify your closest supermarket, pharmacy, parks, and favorite dining or coffee spots.<\/p>\n

    Visit iconic landmarks, explore no-cost museums, and take a ride on a red double-decker bus for the view. Some of your best memories will come from wandering without a set plan.<\/p>\n

    Final pointers before immersing yourself in Imperial student life<\/strong><\/h3>\n
      \n
    • Carry a reusable bag \u2013 shops typically charge for single-use ones.<\/li>\n
    • Invest in a waterproof jacket \u2013 umbrellas are ineffective against the wind.<\/li>\n
    • Participate in unique events \u2013 they lead to great stories.<\/li>\n
    • Don\u2019t fret if you feel disoriented \u2013 it\u2019s a common experience in the beginning.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      You don\u2019t need to have everything sorted out on your first day. If you\u2019re reading this, you\u2019re already ahead of where I was when I began at Imperial. So take a deep breath, grab your Oyster card, and start your London adventure one bus ride and Tesco trip at a time.<\/p>\n
